noswal, not sure on your 717. I looked it up for my 787 and it was spec'd at .021. Look it up in your book or ask and one of us can look it up for you.

But, as you have read here, it won't KILL your engine to be over or under a little. Not great for it, but won't kill it. :cheers:

You can buy them at Checkers/Schucks/Kragen/O'Reilly for $2.19 ea. You can get them online, but I have always been able to walk into my local store and buy them there. Autozone usually has them too, but they want like $5.89ea

Yep. $2 each, and I buy the entire box and use them on both my machines over the course of a season. Usually have some left over.

There are two styles of spark plug tips. The threaded ones usually come with an "adapter" that screws onto the threaded stud and converts it to "normal". I avoid those, because it's just one more thing to loosen and become unreliable in a high vibration environment. (You don't want to use something like Loctite because you want to encourage conductivity.)

The two types have different stock numbers. Not PART numbers, but stock numbers - the little four digit code on the end of the box (for NGK, anyhow). Make certain you get the one that is natively compatible with your cables.

I believe that this has generated more action than the threads about 2 stroke oil debate.

I use NGK-BR8ES stock plug, and keep a 1.00 gap guage in the doo. The stock plug is cheap and gives good preformance, why change????

I too ran em straight out of the box til last set. Way overgapped. Engines seem to run and start better with proper gap now.

The Di is it's own animal as far as the 2-strokes are concerned. Depending on the year... a 0.040" ~ 0.044" gap is right. All the other 2-strokes use a gap half that size. (including the RFI engines)

O.K., I just bought a new set at Auto Zone yesterday, 2.67 ea., they were both pregapped at .022, I checked it with my gauge. So I just left them alone.

I've always said "if walmart ain't got it, you don't need it", I think I proved myself wrong.

So whats the deal with iridium & platnum plugs? wouldnt a better conductor metal produce a better spark & therefor a more complete fuel burn...equaling better power & performance? or are they just a waist or money? I havent seen much info about this for watercraft.

They typically suggest to NOT use fancy smancy plugs, and stick with the standard plugs. Cheap, they work.

You will still foul out the expensive plugs just as fast, and now you are out 8 bucks, and not just 2.

Besides, you don't want to burn the oil, just the gas. So a "complete burn" may not be a good thing...
