Hi Guys,

I had the unfortunate experience of blowing a motor last week, and I am looking for some advice.

*2003 Seadoo Utopia 205 - Optimax 250*

I had just picked up the boat from spring service (plugs, grease, belt service etc.), launched, warmed up, went for a good run for about 4 min and lost about 40% power after rolling off throttle to head back. The boat sounded strange, so I monkey'd around a bit, and noticed that it wouldn't rev past 4K. I assumed that the motor had gone into guardian mode, and paid little mind. The next day I did a quick visual inspection, and removed the positive lead to see if I could reset the ECU to listen for warnings. Started up again, same noise, same 4K max rev. **Idle back to the launch/mechanic :-(

Got a call this morning, and was told that a connecting rod had let go, and breached the block! Must have been a small hole, as I inspected as much as I could and didn't see anything, also there was no noise that would have me suspect such a major failure (I have lost rods on sleds without breach, and it was quite noticeable).

I guess none of that matters now, my motor is essentially cooked, and I am unsure how to proceed:

*Should I attempt to have the motor rebuilt?
*I suspect replacing the powerhead is the best course of action?
*Can I get a new powerhead for a 15 year old motor?
*Am I fortunate enough to have someone on this forum recommend a dealer/tech in southern Ontario?
*While the motor is out is there anything else I should be looking at?
*Warming up, proper fuel and oil, general care aside is there anything I could have done to prevent this?

I am really heartbroken on this one. If this had happened in late August I would have shrugged my shoulders and moved on, but losing her before the season really starts hurts bad. Not to mention the sting in the wallet! Anyway, any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated in advance!

Cheers,
Jim
