Bilge pump

I have a 2013 GTR 215 and a 2009 Wake Pro 215. I'm trying to come to an understanding of what comes standard on these models with regard to a bilge pump so that I can make a decision as to whether I need to look at installing a bilge pump in addition to what comes standard.

Do either of these models come standard with some type of bilge pump?

Ok, thanks. I did see that a bilge pump was offered as an option, but I had thought that I had also read that Sea-Doos came with some sort of (more rudimentary) pump as standard. However, when I tried to find that information again I could not find it.

Thanks for your reply.

They do have a system that pulls water out of the hull as you move. It works of the "Variable Venturi" affect. It actually does a good job. But it does NOTHING if the ski is not being driven forward at an On Plane speed.

Thanks for the clarification.

I've seen a video showing an RXP 215 sinking after the 'carbon seal' gave out (after an engine mount gave out). From reading through the comments on that video, it seems like the carbon seal is a major seal (surrounding the impeller drive shaft? - I'm new, so I'm new to the hardware and terminology) and when it gives out it's catastrophic.

A couple of questions about this...

Firstly, if I have my services done when scheduled and done by a sea-doo service outlet, would it be reasonable to say that the chances of a carbon seal (or something similar) giving out are pretty small?

Secondly, in the event of a carbon seal failure, will the optional electric bilge pump be enough to prevent the engine compartment filling with water?

Bump. I just bought a gtr 215 and was interested in installing a bilge pump due to watching a couple videos and reading of skis taking on water and sinking. I called the dealer i bought the ski from and asked about installing a bilge and the service tech said that they haven't installed a bilge in 2 years and that it was completely unnecessary. Im not so sure i agree with them as from what I've read OR are these issues of skis sinking extremely uncommon.

I've got a 2012 GTR 215 and will make a video on installing the pump eventually. There are a few scenarios that will require the aid of a bilge pump: 1) the carbon ring fails catastrophically (normal wear is not a big concern, as it will cause leakage that the built-in bilge system will take reasonable care of, and you'll see it left with more and more water in the hull - so plenty of warning); 2) one of the water-bearing hoses comes loose/off (this is normally due to clamp failure, and can be avoided by constantly checking up on your hoses and clamp condition); 3) your pump fails (i.e. water gets in) and the drive shaft slides forward, unsealing your carbon ring; and 4) you get a hole in your hull. There's not much you can do about the #4 scenario, except get it quickly out of the water. As you can see, almost all of the scenarios involve maintenance issues, and are not expected in newer machines. I'm planning on installing a bilge pump, but not until it's about 5 years old. Even then, it's probably a bit premature. I had a pump failure on a 10-year old Sea-Doo machine I had that unsealed the carbon ring and water filled up the hull (like in that video you're referring to), but it didn't sink completely. You can still drag it along the water, although the engine will likely flood (like mine did). It was a total disaster, but I didn't act on noticing the pump oil seals were pitted. I should have replaced the entire pump before it failed, but live and learn! Good luck!
