how to remove starter on 1999 gtx w/ 787. all I get is a cclick, click. tested solenoid by shkortiing batt. and start. cable, just spark.
tried to turn engine shaft, no turn only slight movement, I assume from joints. remove pump, it spins fine. remove air box and injector to get more room, but still not enough access.
two days later... I removed the exhaust manifold and now have more access, but still not enough to get to the back bolt (#6 allen) or the bottom bolt (also a #6 allen. after taking off the nut on the top front bolt I was able to take off the that #6 allen bolt. It was right in front of me, no problem.I will try again tomorrow to see if I can get to the other two bolts.
well, job complete. (starter is out) and it works. Bench tested it and it works fine. I can turn the engine by hand now. no problems at this time. front bottom bolt wasn't as hard to get to as I thought it would be after me literally climbing into the engine compartment and facing the stern. same for the back bolt, after purchasing a short flex head ratchet. must feel (see) with fingers to find the bolt after finding where it is with mirror and flashlight, and patience.
now to put it all back. LOL for me.
just got the starter back on. what a job. BIG HINT. in order to get to the front bottom bolt and the back bracket bolt (#6mm allen)I taped the allen bolt to the allen socket. the fromt needed to have a 3" extension and the back only the socet with the bolt taped to it. I did not tighten the front bolts all the way so that I could wiggle the starter around trying to find the hole for the back bracket bolt. finally, it is in and now to put the rest of the stuff back on.
