Automatic Bilge Pump Not working

2004 Sportster 4-TEC Bilge Pump

At the end of last year I noticed that my bilge pump was not operating automatically when water collected inside the hull. I could turn it on and off manually and it worked fine but would not operate automatically – with the master battery switch turned on or off, it made no difference. My manual indicates that this pump will operate on its own no matter how the master battery cut-off switch is positioned – and it worked fine, previously.

I replaced the bilge pump this year with the same model. It still does not operate automatically if water were to enter the hull / engine compartment. The internal float within the bilge pump is free and clear. Is there another water sensor or relay that I am not aware of that operates when the float rises within the pump assembly?

I also noticed that when the main battery cut-off switch is in the on position, I can operate the pump and blower switches manually without having to insert the key – is that normal? They can not be operated manually when the main battery cut-off switch is in the off position and no key is inserted.

Any help or insight you can provide is appreciated.
