Has anyone installed one of these Aqua steps on their challenger 1800 boat or other?

I do not have the step or hardware, and it looks like a few bolts are snapped off where the OEM one resided.
Looking at the Aqua step, looks like a doo`able item...
any comments appreciated. Thanks...

You can buy the factory ladder from windline. the prices are very reasonable actually.

I've never installed an aftermarket version... but my Genesis has one. It makes getting back on VERY easy. (but the islandia swim ladders are SWEAT !!)

the original ladder is gone, and I`m not really interested in getting a replacement oem, I was not impressed with it. sloppy U clamps, broken rubber strap, broken bolts still in the holes etc etc. I thought an aftermarket step would be a good solution being they make many for the PWC`s.
as far as adapting the mounting to suit the hull, that can be figured out. I don`t have any examples to view around here.

Thanks guys...

If you figure it out and do it, make sure to document the process. Might make a good alternative for other people.

I agree... the OEM 1800 ladder sucked. It wasn't easy, and used rubber in it's latch. The Islandia ladders are under a hatch, and just flop out. I have to clean the boat tomorrow, and I'll post a up a pic.

I agree 100%, for most of the fit and finish for a 98 boat back in the day, they certainly could have spent a few more dollars on a better boarding ladder... That U clamp set up was sloppy at best. Would have been nice if something was designed at the Bow so you didn`t have to flounder around near the jet pumps. I could def see people placing their foot on the steering linkage somehow...

So...are you going to be the designated product tester? :)
Even though my ladder is complete and functional, I am always interested in improving my stuff.

Sorry I didn't post sooner. But, I took a couple days off... and now I had to play catch up at the shop.

Here's the Islandia ladders. There is one front and back. They are the best boarding ladders around. I know my style isn't able to be retrofitted, but the company who makes them, sells a flat mount version. Just open the hatch, and flop it out. They are strong and ridged. I use it to get in and out of the boat even while it's on the trailer.

I`m communicating with Aqua step now to finding a solution for a custom step similar to what the ski`s use... retractable step...
I just sent over the dimensions of that factory mounting area...

unfortunately there are still 2 broken bolts, 1 flush and 1 buried. I managed to get one out from the back side which was a third bolt, but no luck with any type of drill bit I have for the other 2...
I drilled another hole on each mounting area just in a little from the broken ones and tapped all the holes to 1/4-20...
since I`ll be needed a conversion plate for anything aftermarket, I can lay out and drill the holes using flush/flat heads if necc...

here is an update from Aqua Step:
OK ANDY WE HAVE ONE LADDER THAT WILL WORK. IT IS THE 1089UMLX. BECAUSE OF THE LIMITED DEPTH YOU HAVE THE PLATE WILL NOT WORK. WE CAN PROVIDE THE INSERTS YOU NEED TO MOUNT IT TO YOUR BOAT.

I was really hoping to use the single step retractable unit like on the PWC`s. as you read, it can not be done.
I`m not to jiggy with going to a ladder style at 2x the price... right now I can`t justify the amount of time`s I`ll be boarding from the water to warrant this ladder which I really don`t care for... the OEM ladder new is 250 and that`s a joke.
I asked for more info, lets see what happens...

worse case is I wasted more time drilling and tapping new holes in an attempt that something could be done...

update: ok, now looking at the Windline boat ladders similar to the OEM. I`m waiting to hear back from Windline to see what the bolt hole dimensions are for their BR96 bracket kit for use with a 2 step ladder.

At one time they made the ladders for SeaDoo, but ceased since SeaDoo is out of the boat building business.

Aquastep has not responded with their last correspondence of actually looking into what`s needed to use their product...

so, onto the next... and I`m not a big fan of the oem type ladders but seem that`s all that will reasonably work, argh...

I've been watching this thread and am interested to see what you end up with.
I don't know what I'll end up doing, but I'm sure I need to put some sort of step on. Else my kids will be all over the jet drive.

you def don`t want them stepping on the jet pump...lol...
I`ve already had the PO step on the steering linkage between the 2 pumps... oof...

the issue with this challenger is that there is no real continuous flat surface to do anything but the POS OEM ladder...

I have to say, since working on a 99 Challenger right now the factory windline ladder is DA' BOMB! Being 6'-2" 230# I can put my feet on the last rung and just pivot and lay across the deck and work on the engines perfectly. The rubber strap was broken on this one as well at one point but replaced with a heavy duty piece of webbing with a snap.

Which one are you looking to get the UP-2? If so that is the exact same one on the one I have here and those other brackets look the same.

The brackets measure 3.125 center to center measured across the bracket and 1.250 front to back. Which I'd bet are the same bracket. You can't use a longer bracket do to the way the glass is molded. There is also a flathead screw with a washer where the end of the tube will apply pressure to the boat and not dig into the gelcoat. If you need pics let me know.

So the UP-2 is $95 and the brackets are another $30, plus shipping. So you like 1/2 the cost, not shabby.

Not sure what the hang up is (other than the cost) on the Windline ladder. I have the same one on my Speedster. Personally I couldn't imagine a single step to get back in with it would be awkward as all get out an I have two really nice handles in the back of my swim platform that the Challenger does not have. I know you have a couple of years on me (I'm 38), but with a single stepper you better be a world class gymnast or a Russian contortionist to put your leg over your head to get out of the water. LOL

What I thought I would try first, in keeping with the KISS principle, is to run a nylon webbing strap across the transom from one of the U bolt tie downs under the swim platform to the other. Should be usable as a step. Might require a knot or something on either side of the jet pump (I've got the single engine model) to keep one's foot from sliding downhill towards the jet pump.
In theory, the webbing strap I have should stretch down enough that it is at step height and can help someone get onboard, but not hang low enough that it can get tangled up in the pump or steering. So, it would be left on the boat... no need to fold it up or remove it when underway.
I haven't tried it yet, so who knows if it will work. :)

I have the strap and am headed down for lunch (yes, I work from home), so, I'll go take a picture, as I'm not sure my description is clear...

Thanks Dan! awesome info. I can only go by what I was emailed. The reply from Windline was that they discontinued making ladders for the SeaDoo boats. The dimensions of the OEM mounts and ladder were to SeaDoo`s specs. Windline is not telling me if their UP-2 is a direct replacement as is the bracket kit... If it is a matter of drilling for new mounting holes, then I`m ok with that as long as it fits the allotted space for them...
see attachment.

also I didn`t get the oem brackets with the boat, they are MIA., the strap was missing, and the ladder was boogered up, so in the trash it went...

Here is my high tech boarding step prototype:
