Any 1 tow there boat with a car?

With all of this said... I would say, that a single 2-Stroke ski... on a single trailer would be OK on almost any car. BUT... a new 4-tec ski will be too much for anything other than a full sized car.

Agreed...i used to tow my XP with my 2.0L focus..yeah it did it but i wouldnt really crank on the freeway with a few people in it...at the marina it would spin the front tires like it was its job....

So i decided to over do it with a 6.2L

I can't believe how many people use cars to tow a boat or 2 newer skis. Just buy a freaking truck already. The newer trucks are more comfortable than most cars, and the gas mileage isn't as bad anymore. IDK, just seems silly to use your car like that.

I cant speak for everyone, but i didn't purchase my car to tow the ski...i bought the ski regardless of what car i drove...it certainly helped to purchase a truck, but it is completely overkill, even though i didnt purchase the truck to tow the ski...most people will deal with what they have and make it work...and in most cases works sufficient enough....

It just seems silly to me that people want the Arabs to get richer on our hard earned cash thats being gouged away from us by oil companies... Its bad enough putting $100 in the ski's, I don't need some gas guzzler V8 to pull an 1800lbs boat, and anyone that says you do is either a moron or in bed with the oil companies. You find me a truck that seats 5 and get 50 mpg and is as comfortable as my Volkswagen, and I'd flirt with buying a truck, but that'll never happen so I'll just having to keep hauling my train with my car.

..in order to keep the trailer weight down while transporting, I usually keep the boat gas tank fairly empty and just carry a couple 5 gallon jugs in the frunk. I also blow the trailer tires up to 60 pounds, which decreases rolling resistance...

I wouldn't go messing with trailer tire pressures, just inflate to whatever is specified for the load on the trailer. Are you running bias or radials on your trailer? Bias type tires tend to run hotter, have a shorter life span and are less fuel efficient. I've run radials on my double trailer for tens of thousands of miles and they're pretty worn out now, (they were half worn when i got the trailer) but i've never had an issue, not even with 500mi trips, hauling a** on empty northern highway (in, what they call, summer...) and I still got 45 mpg...

Hey Drmarc, what are you using as a tow vehicle that's large enough to tow and still get 45MPG????????

my TDI golf, its been chip tuned, beefed suspension, upgraded clutch, 3500 lbs euro hitch, some other mods, i can make it do almost 60mpg when i do 50mph all day, oh and its got 200k miles on it and still pulls hard

If you bought a boat then you should know that having a proper tow vehicle is part of the game. If you can't afford it then don't play

You are getting 60 miles to the gallon doing 50mph towing two skis and a boat?????

I think we're in some deep doo doo here!! If it's true the energy crisis has been solved. Tell you what if you're towing with a Golf TDI with bald radial tires on the trailer, do it in Canada, and I'll stay here.

Agreed...most people overloading the towing capabilities dont realize there is more to pulling the weight and moving it safely...there is also controlling it while at speed...id hate to be around a lil golf towing two skis and a boat at freeway speeds as it gets cut off by another car...id like to see that train stop!

Is that imperial mpg or US mpg? Either way dang good!

I hope for your family's sake you have good life insurance.

Why is everyone ripping on the guy with the little golf. If his car can pull it without a problem and he has the biggest brake upgrade he can get, then he's safe. If he can put 8 piston brembo brakes on his golf then it will deff stop it quicker than a truck can. But idk if he can fit 8 piston brembos on a 17 inch wheel that I'm assuming the golf has

This thread has gone full circle yet again and a mod really needs to shut it down.

We can only explain this one more time to the folks that have no clue about physics. All the brakes in the world will not stop your "train" safely when the tow vehicle is a fraction of the weight of what it is towing. IT'S PHYSICS!!

This does not mean that you can't do it quite a bit of the time, but it's not safe and that is why there are laws against it, and an insurance company will not pay out if you are breaking the law by towing beyond it's stated capacity. We have covered this pages ago in this thread.

Sure it makes a cute video on youtube. Yeah, he's towing a boat and two skis from the cabin to the landing. That's great, but keep it off the public roads and highways! I don't need my family getting killed by him sliding through an intersection and his insurance company holding their hands in the air and saying, "sorry, our client was stupid and broke the law"

Sorry to be so blunt on this reply, but we have rehashed this topic to death.

Moderator, put it to bed please!

Agreed, I couldn't have said it better myself. If you're going to own a watercraft you also have the responsibility of transporting it safely to and from the water.

OK OK! I admit, I don't really pull my boat with my car (we use an RX350). But I do have Brembo brakes, so I probably could...

No one gets my humor....

Just an FYI (can't speak for United States but def. can for Canada/Ontario)

If your involved in an accident while towing a trailer the Ministry of Transportation is automatically called in to investigate. If they discover that your trailer is heavier than your towing capacity you will be instantly deemed at fault and charged. Regardless of what actually caused the accident, kinda like drunk driving. Even if someone cuts you off, if you blow over automatically your fault. Unfortunately they DO NOT take in to account any aftermarket parts to increase towing capacity. I'm not trying to be a dick head here, I've just seen this happen first hand with friends towing more than they should accident was not caused by their mistake but they were found guilty and charged with careless (which is a hefty charge). The ministry towed the UHaul trailer to their scale and deemed the weight too heavy for the ford ranger that was pulling it.

Although I'm with Biff ... we're beatin' a dead horse here.

Owen, I don't think anyone was missing your humor on that one. That was a great pic and it made people think. (smile)

You bet you could pull with that machine, it has power it has brakes, but it's missing the weight that you understand, but some of these folks don't. That and the folks at Uhaul would laugh at you when you took it in to have a hitch mounted on it. (smile)
