Looking to buy one this weekend, getting a good deal $8500. What should I look for? What tests should we perform? Any negatives on this type of boat? Thank u in advance for any help you can provide.

The big thing is to take it for a test ride. It should start relatively easy when cold... idle well... and run at all RPM's. Also... from a dead stop... it should accelerate without cavitation. (feels like you are spinning your tires)

The only down side is the power system. The Merc Sport Jet isn't supported by seadoo anymore, so you will need to find a good local Merc dealer. As long as you can do your own work... it's not a problem.

Good luck, and post some pics if you get it.

just went through this!!!!!!!!!!!!!! get under the boat and look in the pump. look at the impeller!!! make sure grate is not broke. next check spark AT EVERY PLUG, because yes it will start on 3 cylinder out of the water!! spark testers are cheap at any auto parts store... them are the big ones.. other then that, the boats are top notch and haul a**.....

When you test it on the trailer make sure the water is hooked up first, then turn the engine on. With the engine on, turn the wheel full port and then full starboard, the engine RPM's should rev up to 1000 RPM's.

on a used motor should be at least 110.. big thing is let the pressure sit on the gauge for a couple min.. this will test the leak down pressure.. if it leaks down right way means it needs a rering job!!!!!

What? Unless you put pressure into the engine block... and seat the intake, and exhausts... you can't judge leak-down. Not to mention... every compression gauge I've owned has a valve in it.

lamarine23: The only way I would buy a boat, without a water test is if I was getting it cheap. OR... I was buying a project. There are SO MANY issues that can come out when it's in the water, over running on the trailer.

What a bust!!!!!!! I drove almost 300 miles to find a boat that had been severely neglected only to be told its normal wear and tear! Frustrated!!! Didn't even get to the compression tests because the boat and trailer look so bad. Anyone know of another x20 for sale in California? I did find a 2004 in the Bay Area but the guy wants $19000?

Sorry to hear that buddy. I'm always buying and selling toys, and I can't tell you how many times I've see that. But, this is why I said you have to water test the boat. Sometimes, people will send the boat out to get a good detailing... so it looks nice... but the neglect will also be in the drive, and you wont know until you go for a test ride.

Unfortunately, SeaDoo boats hold their value... and the x-20 was around $35k new. Personally, $19k for a 2004 sounds high... but depending on the area, he may get it. I would think $16k would be more in line.

Check the Boat Trader, and SearchTempest. You can put in seadoo x-20... and how far you are willing to drive.

Good luck with your search, and we will be here to answer your Q's, when you find one.

Since this was a topic about the X-20, I have a question. Can the X-20 towers be fitted with a shade top like is available on the new Challengers?

When doing your search, don't forget to look for Challenger X as well. If you are set on that model that is. They changed the name in the later years from X-20.

As I have mentioned a few times in my other posts, I have been lucky enough to have a great BRP dealer. He not only sells every BRP product, but is a Mercury Outboard dealer and service center. They not only didn't shy away from my 240 Merc powered X-20, they made suggestions one what to look for when buying and help me maintain it annually.

It is a a great boat and has plenty of power for it's rated capacity. I too would like to find a bimini for this tower. It's not life or death, as we are out for the sun, but you never know when it may come in handy.

I just fired my X-20 up in the driveway yesterday! WOO WOO! The first boat-drink always tastes good, even if it is in the driveway!

I got mine in the same situation as your experience lamarine...guy wanted way too much for neglected boat. I comp tested and all cyl were at about 120. Then checked wear ring by putting flashlight in nozzle and looking thru grate....hardly any light showing-good thing. Offered guy 3k and it was mine. I did have to put hp fuel pump on it, and it runs great now. Original papers were still in it...$27,995 on 2002.

If he would have taken $3000 I would've taken because I wouldve spent another whatever to get it looking new again.

I did end up buying a 2002 challenger 1800 that was in great shape and had about 1600 worth of mechanical work the previous year and another 350 with the new stereo. Boat was very nice inside and out.

That's a sweet looking 1800. I love the colors. You will enjoy that boat knowing it has been cared for a bit more. Neglected vehicles of any sort always leave you wondering.

Have fun with it!

Second that...nice looking! I have the same dark gray seats which I've almost finished painting white....too hot for dark colors.
