Advanced diagnostics mode / ski shutting down

I've put in a decent amount of time on my ski replacing old fuel lines, rebuilding carbs, ect...

End result is it fires up and idles beautifully but shuts off suddenly like it would if you hit the stop button or pulled the lanyard off the dess post. Never idles rough or sounds like it's struggling for fuel, it just stops. It will immediately restart...

Advanced diagnostics mode gives me zero beeps when I install the lanyard, and the ski starts normally (and then almost immediately shuts back down).

Haven't seen this problem on the forum - I've seen a lot of people with the same shut-off symptom, but their skis usually shut off on them suddenly while riding whereas mine shuts off anywhere from 1 to 10 seconds after starting. I don't get the 2 beeps in diagnostic that would be indicative of a faulty DESS post, so unless it's a faulty stop/start switch I'm at a loss

It sounds to me you have a bad post. There is basically no test for this. The lanyard has the ROM (read only memory) which it communicates to the MPEM by magnetics. Over a period of time, that magnetic communication through the DESS post is lost. There is a test to check the post, somewhere here in the forum but even it can be misleading.

I had your same problem on my 1997 Challenger. I changed that post out and have not had it again. That was 2 years ago.

If the ski is running smooth, there is no loading up, the plugs look clean, you are not popping a fuse.......then there is practically nothing else left but the post. The 2 beeps in the advanced diagnostic mode don't apply to a bad post, only the inability of it to not communicate with it.

You can try to clean it with soap and water, use no solvents. This might help a bit. But, in the last few years I've been here, it seems that DESS systems that are 10 years old or over, will likely see this problem.

If you know someone else with this system, you can borrow their post and give it a try. You don't even have to remove it if you can get them to sit close enough to each other. Just make some jumper wires.......:cheers:

Thx for the tip - I'll get one and try it out ASAP. I appreciate what you do here on the board... not a lot of options for the guys with the decade old and older skis other than to DIY, and your wealth of knowledge sure does help!
