Which panels need to be removed at the helm to access the steering cable connection and steering gear. And, how do you remove the panels: 1) Inside the gauges compartment to access the Console cap? and, or 2) Remove the panel below the steering wheel? Can't figure which way to push or pull the panels without breaking something.. ??

Thanks in advance for your input.
Ron

5 screws hold the instrument panel in. Take that off and you can get at it. The windshield makes it a pain to get in there.

Hey,
Thanks a million. Had it off but didn't see or feel it when I first tried. After your post, I found it. You are right about the windshield so it came off as well. Thanks a million.

ps... Appears steering gear is bad inside as wheel turns but cable doesn't turn. Ron

Sounds odd. Maybe something has come apart under there?

My steering had a lot of play in it. I looked in there are found the last person to have it apart didn't put the plastic bushings back in. They were laying in the bottom of the compartment.

Found the steering gear broken inside. Someone really forced the wheel to turn and broke the secondary (short vertical) shaft. Of course the steering cable was rusted together inside so the cable wasn't going to move. Now need source for new gear?

That's unfortunate.

I would check eBay. There's likely a few used ones on there. Likely much cheaper than new.
