A tip if you replace drive line parts - vibration / noise

I replaced the carbon ring, stainless ring, c clip and boot on my boat and put it all together. I hooked the hose up, started the engine and then turned the water on. It started making a loud drone vibration type noise but would sorta go away if I gave it throttle. I thought it was a bad connection with pump so I took pump off, made sure everything was good and tried again... Same noise.

Long story short, the new parts were making a really good seal but not from water pressure, and the carbon ring just needed some water on it. If it had been in the lake the water pressure would have cooled/sealed the carbon ring better.

So, the tip is don't go and spend two days after work trying to figure out where the vibration is coming from until after you dump some water on the carbon ring when its running.

I swapped out pumps, drive shafts and all kinds of attempts to hunt down the part causing vibration so I hope this saves some of you the hassle in the future. doh!!

Yep... that's normal when the carbon seal get's hot.

It's right in the owners manual... it says to not run the boat out of the water for extended periods of time, because damage can occur to the carbon seal. AND... if you are going to run it for a couple minutes... you have to spray the carbon seal with soapy water.

But... thanks for bringing that up, so other's will see it.
