99 GTI has low compression

Had my two seadoos at the shop last week for winterization. and got a call on my 99

Made as funny sound when they started it so they did a compression test and found low compression in one of the cylinders. They say it is either a bad piston or the rod has gone bad.

Estimate was 750-1500

I was hoping to upgrade that seadoo next season but now I'm stuck.

Do I invest the money and keep it a few more years or do I take the hit an sell it and put that money towards a newer boat?
Ive had this GTI for 6+ years and has been virtually trouble free.
 
That's up to you... but a SeaDoo with low compression is only worth "Scrap" price.

FYI... I wouldn't let that shop work on it. A bad rod won't make low compression.
 
Yeah I dont think I would let a shop do my work if they told me a bad rod was the cause of my low compression.
 
the shop has been a very reputable shop for seadoos for many years. I have bought a few from them and the do good work.

I may have misunderstood about the rod...

He mentioned that a bad piston could be the cause
or possible a bad rod causing other problems leaing to the low compression.


either way it sounds like the motor is toast.
 
Id be inspecting it yourself. If youve got bad compression on one side, it could be related to other things, and unless they fix those other things it may just happen all over again.

Have you tested the compression yourself?

Im just sayin... Winters SLOW and people need work..

No, But a bent rod will...


If it's a bad/worn out piston, you could have it back up and running for $300. If it's a bent rod, then your better off to just do an engine swap from SBT or have your engine rebuilt, either way will cost you about $800.

If you don't fix it, you'll probably only get about $400-$600 for it. I don't know what it's worth if you fixed it? Maybe $2000? If you part it out, you could probably get even more out of it..


I would definitly find out for myself what exactly is the problem, then figure out what caused the problem, then decide what it's going to cost you to fix the cause and the damage. Only then can you make an educated choice as to which is the best way to go.
