I need help. i have a 1999 GTI and its completely dead..i ran it one day and then the next, it wouldnt do a thing when you attach the lanyard..i checked the ground and all fuses and then found that water had gotten in the main plug to the mpem and one of the big spades had corroded and burnt off...i replaced the module and still got nothing..can anyone offer what to look for next? could the killswitch be bad? is it two wires feeding it and can i just short those wires to troubleshoot that? any help would be appreciated!

When you say you replaced the module, do you mean the entire mpem?

Yes, i replaced the entire mpem module w/ an aftermarket. cant recall the brand name but it crossed to the original and looked the same except the housing was bllue instead of black. was also told the new mpem did not have to be coded to the lanyard. could it be something else that would cause it to do absolutely nothing?

Yes, if this was really a non-encoded mpem, you can use any key. With that said, when you install the key on the post you should hear two beeps. If you aren't, I'd suspect that there is a problem with the wiring between the two (post and mpem). Check that out first and make sure that the wires are making a proper connection.

yea, thats kinda what i was thinking..guess i will pull the post apart tomorrow and check things in there. i also see a little corrosion in the harness to mpem plug that needs to be cleaned up.

Hopefully it is just a bad connection. If you are seeing corrosion, you might as well check all wiring connections, especially on the battery terminals. Good luck, and let us know how you end up! :)

Did you ever resolve this issue? This is about the third post I've found for 99 GTI's going completely dead but haven't found a root cause. Please let me know what you find.

Thanks,
