98 Speedster Engine compartment hood cable

Any ideas on how to replace the cable? My replacement cable arrived, but I'm not sure how to install it. Has anyone done this before?

What's the maintenance on cables to keep them from binding? Do I spray WD-40 or some kind of lubricant yearly?

Ok, I received no responses and it's the weekend. I will try it on my own and hope for the best. I'm tired of using a screwdriver to open the hood and I'm going south to try a new lake this weekend so I was hoping to have the latch fixed. It's not going to last much longer with the shape it's in then I won't be able to get into the engine compartment at all.
