Hello everyone

I purchased a 98 Sportster from a charity auction last year and I'm just getting around to working on it. It appears the port engine is toast, along with the driveshaft.

The starboard engine runs but the RPM's are way too high (possible carb/throttle adjustment). I'm guessing just go with a rebuilt carb?

My questions so far are (1) where is a good place to get a rebuilt engine with carb that is ready to go? and (2) I'm looking at the fuel pump and would like to replace, has anyone rigged a new pump to the old pump holder? What kind of fuel pressure do you need?

I tried posting pics here but I get a "undefined" code when trying to upload so here are my pictures so far:

When I'm finally finished with this I will do a complete writeup:)

Thanks everyone

Also, my "jet" nozzles are looking a bit corroded. What's a good way to rehabilitate these? Maybe a wire brush on a rotary tool?? And then prime/paint?

Well it's hard to answer your question because you don't give your location. There are several reputable engine rebuilders but since freight is a large factor it's hard to recommend one. Judging from the condition of the boat it's been used in the ocean, can you at least tell us which coast?

To clean up the corrosion I would use a bead blaster, since it's aluminum a wire brush or rotary too is too harsh.

I'm in Colorado at the moment (though this boat will be headed to Lake Tahoe soon). Anyhow I checked a few seadoo sites and shipping for a 717 engine is about what sales tax would be......

I agree with loudoo im buying a new rebuilt 657x engine from them next week I have bought a lot of stuff from sbt and I must say they are A+
I have bought crankshafts pistons and engines
last engine was a Kawasaki 1100 stx and it has ran perfect since sbt sent it to me 2 years ago
I agree with loudoo on sbt 100 percent but never have bought the 2 year premium engine I all ways buy the 1 year standard engine I figure if something is wrong with the engine I should see it within the first year for sure-------but I allways go premix to.

I didn't think these boats were THAT dirty - but the fuel injected ones are permitted? Colorado doesn't seem to have the same concerns but I guess it makes since being how these engines mix oil/fuel.

Since I'm buying at least one new engine is there anything I can put in there to skirt Tahoe's rule? I could leave the dirty starboard oil burner in (and not use) but maybe a nice lawnmower engine WITH fuel injection on the port?? LOL

Well I guess I can still go to Laughlin with the Seadoo (but not Lake Mead) I didn't realize I bought an "outlaw" boat. Oh well, I'm still fixing her up:)
