If the magneto ground wire wasn't hooked up to the other motor would that cause that motor to not run correctly ? It would run but I thought it was carburetor so I got a new one but still wouldn't run rite so then I was thinking it might be the timing because it was running so rough and while unhooking everything I came across this ground wire that hooks up to the other magneto cover could that be my issue or should I continue and do a pressure test of motor and check the timing since I have everything unhooked ? I'm new to this and haven't even been on water yet the guy we bought boat from said it was running great I thought I did something wrong when we tried to take it out the first time and I thought both motors were running and I was up and down on throttle for a while before realizing only one motor was running so be gentle and. Thanks in advance for your help ! Kevin in sc

Generally... no... that ground won't cause any issues. It just grounds each engine together, directly. But... there are still other grounds in the system.

Since the boat is new to you... I would start with a compression check. On the 800 engines... you are looking for 150 PSI. (cold engine, open throttle) But, anything over 135 should run OK.

Once you get that for us... we can go from there.

thanks for the response Dr Honda before I unhook everything on the boat I did do a compression check and it was 135 per cylinder the spark plugs were wet and black oily and there was lots of oil coming out through the exhaust and tuned pipe had a small pinhole in it which I have welded already I also noticed the fuel filters were really dirty so changed them also bought new plugs tried adjusting carberator again this time with air cleaner off because it was easier to get to adjustors it still ran rough rpms would only go to 3500 then found out in manual that was as high as it would go in neutral put it in forward and reverse same thing starts spitting gas out of carb and shuts off I checked the other motor in gear it went to about 6000 rpm and it had that zingy sound to it where this motor doesn't I also didn't mention I had the oil lever out of adjustment to rich and plugs cleared up but still a rough idle and no zingy sound or smooth like the other motor that is why I'm taking it out to do timing and pressure check degree wheel will be here tommorow I hope you are able to follow everything I'm saying and thanks again for listening and for your help !

Hey there I pulled motor out today started fabricating a pressure kit out of 16 gauge sheet metal still waiting on my degree wheel to check timing :) I found some pieces of brass on motor mount rite next to magneto looked all under motor with mirror and couldn't find a hole in block (mystery metal) lol took some pics
