I was wondering if it is possible to run the engine without the pipe install for a few seconds. This engine hasn't been ran for almost nine years. I have everything back together except the pipe. I would like to make sure it cranks over and runs before I install the pipe, just in case I need to tweak something. With the pipe out it makes it easier to spot any issues as well. Any idea if this is an issue for a few seconds? Any error messages if pipe isn't installed?

If there are flames coming out you have big problems inside the motor. The exhaust should not have any flame.

flames out of the exhaust manifold on a 2 stroke? Sure
I agree, I was imagining a fireball when I replied. The need to be safe with gas fumes in an enclosed hull is very relevant in this situation. It's snowmachine season right now and I was answering with sleds on the mind. Flames out a sled manifold isn't a good sign. Admittedly I do not have experience with that specific motor when the exhaust is off.

Yes it can be run for a few seconds, but be VERY CAREFUL about gas fumes in the hull. Only start it long enough to confirm it will fire off.

Looks cool a night though. Sounds even better !! :D

Keep a fire extinguisher handy and yes you can have some flame left over from combustion remember the pulse from the exhaust pushes the fuel charge back into the cyl.and the fuel that pukes out is atomized and ready for the explosion
