Need some help here to see if I'm on the right track/what jetting I should use in a carb rebuild.
I was gifted a 98 GSX Limited (951 engine). When I first got it, I was told the carbs had been gone through recently and it had fresh gas. Believed both of those things (big mistake, I know). Started and ran on the hose, but wouldn't get on plane. Pump/wear ring is fine. I took apart the carbs, blasted everything out with carb cleaner, replaced all the fuel lines (had the old gray Tempo lines that had totally gunked up the carbs), new fuel filter. Did not completely rebuild carbs as the components looked relatively new, and at the time I didn't have a gauge so I didn't check pop off pressure (I know, mistake again). Once I put everything back together it ran great and fired right up, a little stutter in the ¼ to ⅓ throttle range but nothing serious. After sitting less than a week, it now won't start. I did find some debris in the fuel filter, and I think some of the mesh ripped (see pics). I took the carbs off and there was a little debris in the internal filter. When I spray starting fluid in the intake with the carbs off, it does fire and run for a second, which leads me to believe it's just a fuel problem.
Other info: Compression good, 140PSI in both cylinders, spark is good. The boat has Pro-K flame arrestors instead of the stock airbox and the accelerator pump is gone (literally sawed off of the carb cover, but the small fuel lines are appropriately plugged on the carbs). Jets are 165 main (stock), 80 pilot (smaller than stock, as it looks like 82.5 is stock). The boat is also fouling plugs very fast (see pic, that's after about an hour of ride time with brand new plugs), more of an oily fouling than black and charred.
Current plan: drain and clean the fuel tank since I'm thinking this must be where debris is coming from, blow out/clean all the lines, install in line fuel filter in fuel line to carb, properly rebuild the carbs with a Mikuni kit and replace needles and seats.
Question is, am I on the right track? And without an accelerator pump/with the different air intake, what should my jetting/needle/pop off be? Would I be better off trying to find an accelerator pump to put back on? Made some rookie mistakes already, want to do this one right. Thanks!!!
