First off thanks to all who take the time to read through all the post and give help to those of us that are lost.. I'm a first time owner of a Jet Ski just got it this past winter..Took it out few weeks ago ran like a dream first few times then cousin got on it and flipped it and since then been having troubles? Wouldn't start up had to tow it back in tried to turn over (heard the two beeps)but wouldn't thought the battery might be dead, water in the engine?

Took it home changed the battery and the spark plugs cleaned the fuel filter, few days later took it back out and ran for about 30 min's and then stalled out the plugs keep fouling any ideas would be great..

Narrows it down to Two posabilities. Diagnosis is needles & seats leaking.

1. Open the gas cap, Do you get a big SPPPP? Breath check valve not releaseing
Fuel tank pressure, it builds until it over-comes the needle-seat spring and
FORCES the gas thru it.
2. Needles & seats are wore out, replace them & clean carb filters, be careful, if
they tear just a little, you'll need a rebuild kit and a pop-off tester to test the
pressure after re-assembly.

K newbie here so not sure what your talking about with number 1? When we open the gas cap yes it does do that.. This is all like Rocket science trying to figure it out.

It's been raining here so haven't had a chance to get back out and take it apart but would like to do it by this weekend..is cleaning the carbs easy and how would I know if the needle & seats are worn out just by looks and then where can you easily buy the replacement?

Ok cleaned the carb's they didn't look bad at all... Also drained all the gas out which looked almost clear which was odd because I had added a premix to it.. Which I'm not sure I should have as it also has a tank for separate oil which I had oil in it also doesn't look like it's been plugged as I followed the lines and their all going to where they should..

So my question is now do I refill it with pre-mix or simply just gas? I had no idea owning a jetski would be this tough!! going to try it out again tomorrow and run it hard as we have yet to do that we normally just putz around...

performance problems

You will soon find out the *plugs are still wet. End up rebuilding carbs, replaceing N & S.
Your ski stock has oil injection, no need to mix oil and gas. This is where its handy
to have the ski's history. Any trained tech can tell you if the ski was converted to
pre-mix by following the oil tanks bottom supply lines. A large goes thru the lower case, out other side and dumps back into tank top. A medium goes down to a filter
and then the oil injection pump in front of motor.

If you see a plate there and no pump, its been converted and you will have
to address proper mixing by hand. Bills86e

So your saying everything we did was in vain and will still have to replace the N & S? Was really scared to attempt this as I have "NO IDEA" what I'm doing I guess I'm going to have to take it and have it done... Has anyone had this done and if so was wondering what the cost is etc.?

Just sucks that people can't be honest we bought this thing the guy said ran like a gem and now of course won't return phone call so we can even ask him if it takes pre-mix etc...

Another Test Run gone bad...

Well Bill you might be right however when taking it out yesterday it started right up and ran in idle for awhile however when taking it into the fast lane it won't rev up?? Actually it sounds like it does for a second and then bog's down (like when a motor is out of water) like it's totally skipping a gear so just rode awhile in idle and of course it stalled again and yep towed it back into shore :ack: So is this still sounding like a carb problem Once again thanks for taking the time to answer all our questions guys it's almost a full-time job....

NGK Spark plugs need replacement

I got similar problems and a friend that has worked many years with 2 cycle engines says that the NGK spark plugs are garbage because they ran too cold and tend to build up gunk.
I have either replaced them or clean them very often. My 787 calls for
NGK BR8ES. Any ideas for after market replacements or better plugs.

Thanks Johnny

Called around

Well I called around today and got a price of about $250 to rebuild the carb etc in my Jetski does this seem like a fair price? I can only hope this is what is really wrong with it...

With any 2stroke the first is compression, then pressure test fuel system to 3lbs, any air leak is where fuel is missing causing leanout or surging and overheating pistons=meltdown, make sure the oil tank is drinking - mark it and run 5 gallons premix to be sure - mixing oil often causes a gel to block the oiling nozzles, get the name from the old owner or cut off the front of plastic bottle so you know next time, do you see any gray fuel lines? you would think anybody with a marine background would already have changed these troublemakers, finally clean the water/fuel filter under the handlebars and put a dab of grease on the seal so it can not skid to the side causing an air leak.

A carb rebuild kit is around $50 from your local marine shop. You will save $150 doing it yourself. There are some good guides on carb rebuild on this site.

Wish I had never bought it!!!

Well figured I would give everyone an update.. The Jet ski has been in the shop since June 16th.. Had the Carbs rebuilt thinking that was the problem well didn't help took it back out to test it and after 30 min's it stalled again and wouldn't start.. So back to the Mechanic we took it!!! He took it out on the lake to test it and it finally stalled for him so he seen the coil was fried replaced it and took it back out to test it again and from what he said still didn't help so he replaced the stator well today we finally get a hold of him again and he said that didn't even do the trick he now thinks it might be that we need a new MPEM???

This is so annoying feel like I bought a lemon have yet to truly even ride the thing myself and the summer is just about over.. The Mechanic we have working on it is taking his good ole' time working on it because he of course is working on boats and other jet ski's in between.. He does keep calling Seadoo and they are stepping him through what it could be?

He told us today he has a guy who is "suppose' to bring his 1997 XP in tomorrow just for a general service checkup so he was going to swap out his mpem to see if that's our problem.. I'm just at a loss I've sunk another $600 so far and have yet to have the problem fixed.. I paid $1,800 for the thing and the body is in great shape I worry will I even be able to resell the thing or am I totally out this money with nothing to even ride!!!

Sorry guys for venting it's just hard when you know nothing about JetSki's and your so excited to get one and then this happens!!!

Now the mechanic said I should try and locate a used mpem perhaps I can find one before him.. He said that the 1997 Seadoo XP isn't compatible with any other year.. Go figure...

Pam (aka feedup!!!)

I don't think so!

Why didn't he test the MPEM n the first place? I would bet the MPEM isn't the problem! If it starts and runs? I would pick it up before he rips you for another $600.00

?

Well if the mpem isn't the problem and he's done everything I've said what else could be wrong any ideas anyone? As I said it runs great for about 30 min's then stalls out and sometimes restarts but most of the time has to be towed right back in. It use to beep twice pretty loud but I noticed last time we picked it up after he worked on it had a hard time getting it too beep however it would still start?

I have seen the suggestion mentioned, but have not seen it addressed. Has the fuel system been pressure tested??

I called the tech today to ask if the fuel system has been pressure tested, but he wasn't in. I'm not sure what "pressure tested" means.
However, if it's a heat related problem, is there a sensor that may be causing
the problem. My dad had the same issue, same symptoms with a car and it turned out to be a "crank sensor". I know it's apples and oranges.

A pressure test will just look for leaks within the fuel system. If there is a leak somewhere the doo will run like crap.

did you try just changing out the plugs..I took mine in to have the carbs cleaned and he said all it needed was new plugs. mine would idle well then bog when I hit the gas
