97 XP Possible blown MPEM

When I inserted the key, it would beep twice but not start when I pressed the start button. I diagnosed the problem by unplugging the MPEM connectors and then checking for continuity from the start switch. It turns out that my start switch is bad. During this test, I did not disconnect the battery.

I plug the connectors back in so I could jump out the starter switch at the switch itself. Now when I plug in the key, nothing, no beeps. All of the fuses on the MPEM module are good including the 15A in the electrical box. I am getting 12v to pin 2-26 on the MPEM. Since my start switch is no good, I shorted the wires at the switch several times and the gauges did not activate. Pressing the VTS switch does nothing either. Does it sound like I damaged the MPEM by disconnecting the connectors without disconnecting the battery first?

Any other suggestions on what to check next?

I have the same ski and myine beeps sometimes and sometimes not but it will still run.To check if it is the start button jump across the starter relay and see if it truns over

1. Many of these skis have intermittent buzzers. I have already replaced two of mine with a similar buzzer you can get from Radio Shack. The buzzer is working on this ski.

2. I can jump across the relay and it will crank.

3. The problem is not the relay. The MPEM is not triggering the relay.

4. I know that I definitely have a bad start switch.

5. The lanyard post checks out according to the test procedure in the manual.

6. I traced out the 12v power to the MPEM. I have a good ground on 2-24 and 12v on 2-26.

So I have good power going into the MPEM and no output at all. How can I prove that the MPEM is bad without spending a lot of money to just swap it out?

By the way, the schematic in the service manual has a few errors on it.

I have a similar problem. I insert the key and nothing. I have checked the key and it seems to be making contact. Does anyone make a replacement for the MPEM? I am sure racers don't mess with that. Also I saw where you can send the MPEM off and exchange it for a repaired unit. Does anyone have any experience using one of those services?

I think msd sells aftermarket ignition control systems for pwc's, you might check into that, but then again I do not know how well your gauges would work amung other things, like mine has the rave valves and what not that work off of the mpem.

I decided to post the schematic with my test results. Maybe someone here can see if I am missing something. By the way, there are four mistakes or the original schematic. As a test, I swapped the post with one from a working 97 GTX. The GTX still starts with the XP post and the XP does not start with the GTX post
