Driving my 97 speedster today lost propulsion on one motor , motor still ran fine but after giving throttle it just revved, left motor running a came back using the other motor, alarm sounded shut the motor off. Pulled plugs they looked fine. Ideas???

If it just revved, you’ve got cavitation on that pump. Check it with a flashlight and see if you’ve got an obstruction or your wear ring is chewed up.

Thanks jeremy! I was reading up and looked at the driveline and the carbon ring looks worn out there is alot of play and there is no boot by the flywheel only 2 zip ties not sure what happened there???

Well if that’s the case, you’re going to be replacing the pto boot and carbon seal, which requires removing the pump and driveshaft. Make sure you inspect the pump very closely for smoothness and that there is no play in the bearings.

Ok. Ive never done this before but doesnt seem to difficult? Should I be replacing stuff since I have it apart, not looking to spend a fortune but ild rather do it once.thanks for your replies I appreciate it.

It’s not difficult at all as long as the carbon seal c-clip doesn’t give you trouble... You’re going to need a new PTO grease boot, a neoprene seal for the pump, and new oil and o-ring for the pump cone. I’d also consider changing the wear ring since you’re going to have the pump off anyway. You’ll need an impeller tool and the new ring obviously to do that job.

Ok. Thanks for the help ill order it up looks like i can get a kit for the carbon ring that has o rings boot. Wear ring separate. Thanks man.

I pulled everything off to change carbon ring waiting for the parts but i slid the driveshaft back in to see if maybe it just popped out with the jet pump off i push the drive shaft in all the way and it just spins but if i have like half the splines exposed it grabs is that right?? There is no boot or carbon ring on solely the drive shaft
The splines all look good.

That shouldn’t happen. Take a flashlight and look at the splines in the PTO itself...

Thanks, I ll look at it again but looking though that hole where the shaft goes in from the back outside of the boat it looked ok in there no metal shavings there was only melted grease on the shaft and in pto since that boot was missing. When I pulled the jet pump off that wear ring was like new no gap at all only found whoever was in there didnt put a gasket where the pump mounts to the hull, they siliconed it, but I never had leaks or a cavitation problem before. I got the carbon ring parts today. Im just puzzled on that driveshaft being a issue, Like maybe when i was driving that shaft came out some how and the impeller stopped spinning which caused the problem??? Ideas??
I really appreciate the help.

Well there should be a small rubber bumper on the end of the shaft that keeps it from bottoming out in the PTO, but it should be fully engaged in the splines when it’s all the way in...

There were 2 small bumpers in the rebuild kit i think there was only one on the shaft should there. be one on each end?

Pto side of the shaft im guessing this was my problem? No bumper, and I assume the pto should be replaced also??? Must of just spun in the pto??

Yep. There’s your problem! Yes, I would replace the PTO also. A used one should be very easy to find. As for the driveshaft, measure the length. I believe the jet boats used the same driveshaft as the skis that year, but let’s double check to be sure.

Any tips on getting that pto off ? I read about pulling the plug closest and putting rope in the cylinder, I ordered a impeller tool but not sure that will hold in there since the shaft didnt.

I am having this problem on my 02 sportster, did you figure out the problem?
Yes the driveshaft and the pto splines were both worn out . New pto, driveshaft, carbon ring (driveline rebuild kit). Wear ring was fine on mine, but if its off check it . Removing that spark plug closest to the rear of the head, and turning pto a little stuffing a rope down cylinder and turning pto til it stops and a chain wrench around the pto and a pipe on it turn counterclock wise work well for me. Jeremy helped diagnose the issue thank god no one works on these around me in illinois.

My pto is bolt on, but I have gone through 2 shafts and a pto this summer The splines keep getting stripped on the bottom of them I think my motor moved forward

I feel for you that is horrible. Have you replaced the pto or just the driveshaft. If I pulled my driveshaft out a little it grabbed but if I pushed it all the way in it spun freely in the pto.

Did you post your issue ? Im not as knowledgeable as most of the others, but to me it seems the driveshaft is sliding in the pto if its eating up the bumper.
