Update - Again no spark

Finally got the GTi back in the water. It ran pretty good for a while, then shut off. Started right back up and ran for about 10 minutes, then shut off but started right back up. Third time out, ran for about 20 minutes and then shut off again, but this time it would not start back up.

Got it back home and checked again, and not spark. The new magnetor coil is reading about 60 ohms, so it appears to be OK. The ignition coil (in the rear electrical box) reads about 1.5 ohms. Specs say that should read about .5 ohms.

With the intermittent issue and then full dead, would that likely be the ignition coil, or back into the magneto again?

Magneto Centering Tool

After pulling the flywheel back off, I found that my stator ws rubbing the flywheel, and likely overheated. For re-sassembly, the manual says to use a magneto centering tool.

Since I don't have a centering tool, is there another way to get the magneto stator centered so it won't rub the flywheel again?

Did you ever get this problem fixed,I am on my second stator assembly, and cant figure out why I keep destroying my assembly and flywheel!!!

There is a issue with the 97 flyweels I think!! I took one apart a few weeks ago that only had 55hrs and the ring gear had moved to throw it off balence, then wrecked the stator and crankshaft. I've never seen this prob with the 95s...I'd recommend using parts off a 95 XP 720.

97GTI, if it has happen twice more than likely it has thrown the crank out of true or has deformed the shaft a bit. That surface has to be a PERFECT mating surface between it and the flywheel.
