Hello, (First time posting, newbie - bear with me)
I just purchased this boat with little experiance so please have patience while I learn the terminology.

I have a 97 Challenger (single Engine) with a broken throttle cable and a disconnected VTS cable. I have a couple questions.

I have included a picture of the throttle assembly (I hope).
1) You can see the throttle cable is broken, I already have a replacement cable. I assume it is going to be fairly easy to replace the throttle cable. Just feed it through like the old one. Any gotchas I should be aware of?

2) The Varible Trim System (VTS) - The auto centering feature (cable) seems to be disconnected. It seems like it is just a short cable that runs from the Forward/Reverse lever to the VTS lever. From the picture you can see it is disconnected. The cable looks like it needs to reach at least six inches to be connected. Doesn't look possible to me but I didn't want to torque on it either. I have the shop manual but there is not a whole lot of information about the connections in section 9-04 or 8-02.

3) It's pretty dirty, what would you use to clean it? If it were a car, I'd spray it with brake cleaner and clean it that way but don't want to mess up any marine lubricants here...

4) is there a better manual than the SHop Manual?

Thanks in advance! Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah - the heat gun thing really works on the console. Note: it turns white first then goes green. Scared me at first.

Very easy:
1) Soft scrub w/bleach - rub it on - probably not even necessary
2) Heat gun from Harbor Frieght - $9 to $15
3) Heat gun on high setting - (2-3 inches away)
4) It turns white briefly but after that it goes back to the original color
5) "Wipe New" - haven't done this yet but it is a protectant to keep the color

It only took 10 minutes to do that half of the console.

For question 1) From the Seadoo.com parts view it doesn't show this cable connected to anything. When someone gets a chance can you confirm the compensator cable - VTS (277000542) s not connected to anything?

Sorry for the bother with this...

i can check on mine if your still having issues. i have to remove mine anyway to weld a broken throttle handle

No need to check the cable attachments... The added "compensator" cable is for the steering assist. There is a Y cable for the throttle, one end goes to the throttle lever the other goes to the steering wheel. When the steering wheel is hard over it gives the engine just a tiny bit of gas when in idle so you can still steer. I've had that throttle assembly out way more times than I can count. Thanks for the offer to check!
