I took the plunge. Cut into my MPEM, pics to follow as there aren't any out there, and located my diode that runs the 5a fuse. Measuring current across it shows .482 and 0L when ran backwards, as it should. I have no power going to the coil packs, thus no spark at the plug. Anyone have any ideas?

The 800 engine uses a DC-CDI unit. Unfortunatly... in 97... they made it an internal part on that MPEM. They don't live forever, and it may just be dead.

With that said... you won't have any real power going to the coil pack. The CDI will simply give a 300v blast to the coil to fire it. (short duration pulse) The only way to really measure it is with an O-scope.

And finally... the MOST common issue with the 800 engine, when you loose spark, is that the pick-up coil will break free from it's mount. Have you check that?

The coil packs are still attached and look good. I'm starting to lean more toward the key or the dess post.

Also, if the cdi is toast, couldn't I just hook up something from MSD?

gator6977, i also have a 97 challenger 1800 that does nothing when you put the key on the post and no power to coils. i jumped the starter solenoids and the engines turn over ok but no spark. after checking the schematics i decided to back feed 12 volts on the purple wire for the guages and powered up the individual engine cpus. jumped the starter solenoids and i had spark. the problem seems to be in the main cpu not powering up. i also have started to take my mpem apart to find if something on the circuit board is bad but it is taking along time to remove all the potting. i'm starting to think it would be easier to do the conversion to the two jet ski mpems.

Fortunately, mine never stopped cranking. Here's the weird part. I reinstalled my mpem and suddenly had spark. Only other thing I can think of is my dess post. I took it out as well and accidentally cleaned the connection with my ohm meter. Taking it out Wednesday to test out it.
