New to site and am looking for some help. I have a 96 xp that does not want to crank. When you first try, it turns over. Then after that all you here is the starter trying to engage. I tried to jump the solenoid and all you get is the same, starter tries to engage, but won't turn over. It has done this twice. Turns over a couple of time and thats it. I've checked all fuses and battery only other thing I can think of is a bad wire connection. Any help appreciated.

Starter

pull the starter from the ski you'll need a 3/8 hex to remove the three bolts and i believe a 10mm to remove the positive lead **remember always disconnect the positive lead from the battery before working on major electrical items** and test it without the load on the motor by hooking it up to a battery charger on the driveway and give it 12volts 6amps and it sould spin very freely. Then turn it to 12 volts 2amps and see what it does if it has problems spinning the starter might be shot i was having the same thing with my 96 xp and i ended up replacing the starter and the battery becuase the starter killed my battery. If you find that the starter is bad get one off ebay for 50-60 bucks. Let me know if you need anything.

Brain fart

:agree: yeah sorry its earily here i'm still working on my pot of coffee remove the negitive first then the positive! Thansk custom!

Don't have much experirece with these skis but thanks to everyones ideas and threw the process of eilimination I got it started. Checcked all of the things I was told, still same result. Finally I decided to pull the plugs and see if it would turn over. It did so I replaced plugs, turned over a couple of times and quit again. I repeated the same process and same result. Next time I pulled one plug and left the other in places and proceeded to crank until it finnally fired. Replaced other plug and got it cranked. I ran for a while, and turned it off and it cranked right up again. I guess it was fludded. Still a little worried, but glad it started. First of many problems to fix. I hope yall don't mind me picking your brains. Thanks for help!!!!

flooding it would not have made it do what your first problem was in this thread, you would have had to almost hydrolock the motor to get the problem the way you explained it. Be carefull you might have another problem that was looked over and by chance it just decided to crank over for you.

now, if you flooded it then kept trying to crank it, it would have killed your battery and gave you that problem also........try to give us the problem you are having and what happened up to that point....then maybe we can provide an acurate answer for you quickly
