Hi! I am new here but i have alot of car background as i teach shop at a local high school but hopefully you can help me with this SeaDoo. i have a 96 spx just put back together. ran like crap above idle so i replaced all the fuel lines, and thoroughly cleaned carbs and filters. took it out and it was a rocket but died out. bat light would flash intermittent, ended up being a loose ground cable. i tightened ground and found the small black ground from MPEM and ran it to the battery as well as the block. Seemed to run great so i took it out again (this time with the wife!) and rode for about a minute and it died out suddenly, guages still worked. When i went to restart it cranked kinda slow like the battery was weak or resistance on the engine. it is a fresh rebuild but i dont trust the oil injection and i dont know if i should remove it. it got towed back and i charged the battery (with cables hooked up, i know now to unhook when charging) got it to start on land but alot of water blew out of the muffler. could that be from the maniac towing me in at fast speed filling the eng and exhaust? well anyway with the engine running it only makes 13.1 volts when its cranked up high, no battery light on. could the loose ground or me charging it with cables on have cooked the rectifier? the stator has resistance it just seems like a car alternator when a diode goes bad and you only get partial voltage. i was wondering if it would run for longer than a minute on the new battery if it was still charging at 13.1 or is my stalling problem something else. please help me as i would like to take it to the cape tomorrow if possible, i dont care if i have to keep charging the battery. no local dealers have a rectifier. thanks in advance!!! P.S. sorry for writing a book but i want to give all details

i went back out and after it starts up and runs for about 30 seconds it will go up to 13.85 volts. i know with cars this is tolerable just not sure if it is ok for a sea doo or does it need more. i still think it may have another issue so if anyone has had a similar problem please let me know. thanks

my understand'n, if battery isn't in the mid to upper 14v, when ski is running, then rectifier is to blame. guess it cant hurt, keep charg'n, or put a nasty charge to it tonight. Dont know the longivity of charged battery with bad rectifier...

Information........?

O.K.....you teach shop, so I expect a bit more from you. Is it o.k. that I hold you to a higher standard?............:)

The first thing I would ask you is, what do your spark plugs look like? That's the one most important piece of information that could help. I don't think you have a "real" problem with your charging system, but do this. With the ski at rest, take a reading on the battery. It should be about 12 vdc. Now, start it back up. Test it again. You should be getting 14 to 14.5 vdc. But as long as your showing a positive charge or 13 or higher, then your at least getting some power, so that wouldn't cause you to die right out.

The oil injection system, if working is a real good system. You'll save some money. Once again, reading your plugs is the only way to know. Even then, if the oiling wasn't good enough, it wouldn't be the cause of the problem.

Charging.........the problem here and I've posted a thread on this, is jump starting the ski from another vehicle while it's running. The electrical system is set to operate on 12vdc and when you hook it up to another vehicle, that vehicles charging system is sending 14 vdc to your electronics, that's when you fry electricals............and then, most everything is protected by a fuse.

I think your problem may be fuel related. What color fuel lines do you have? In your oil injection system, is the rotary valve in the middle of the engine, still supplied with oil? It's a 96, when is the last time the carbs have been rebuilt? Have you check the check valves on the fuel pump assembly?

Get away from it electrically, look at the fuel........but now, do the test on the charging circuit, but forget that it may be causing you to lose power.

Oh, BTW, when your started and running, is it like the engine goes dead and when you pull the DESS cap off, put it back on, do you still get the 2 beeps. Or do you have to play with it sometime to get those 2 beeps?

i ran it again and it slowly rose to 13.8 volts and stayed there while running. i took it out again and it ran pretty good, but would pop while at WOT jumping over waves. it ran perfect with no waves. prior to all this i changed all the gray fuel lines and cleaned the carbs so since it ran better now i decided to order rebuild kits for both carbs. they werent too bad inside since its a freshwater ski but after that it has been running great. (i also blew through the fuel sender, selector valve and drained and cleaned gas tank) thanks for the replys no i just have to ride the crap out of it!
