96 GSX, sounds like its missing / running funny from 3000-4000 rpm?

Hey guys, my 96 GSX is running funny in the 3K to 4K rpm range if I hold it in there. It kinda sounds like its missing, but it spools right up when I hit the throttle. Also, if I hit the throttle from idle (this idles at 1400ish, seems kinda high to me but I know nothing about Sea Doo's) it marches right past that point without hesitation as the tach swings north. Could it be the impeller cavitating, or how it sits in the water at that speed and the position of the exhaust? My friend and I seem to think thats what it is, but I want to make sure. Thanks!

if the engine is stock its normal. every 787 that I have ever run in the test tank runs rough at around 3500 rpm. its just the nature of the beast.

As far as I know it is stock. Thank you, I feel much better about it now!
