95 SPX vs 96 SPI

I just finished up on the 1996 SPI I purchased last month. I had a lot of fun with it in Florida. I was given a 1995 SPX and looking at the performance I am considering moving to SPX over the SPI.

The X will need some work but performance wise it seems it would be the more desirable ski to own.

On a side note, this is my third jet ski since my first purchase in May of this year. LOL All SeaDoo. I can't see owning 3 skis because the maintenance would just be too much extra work. I really like the GTX and I want to have a second Ski.

Not knowing these ski's or how they work, but comparing them at

1) I only see 3 models released with the 657X engines. I would confirm you could easily get the parts for that specific setup.
2) I would also look into the mechanical differences between the 657 and the 657X.
3) While assuming on my part the 657 and 657X are the same engine at its core, what real world negative impacts occur trying to pull an extra 10HP out of it. Only being released 3 times in the year 94 & 95 makes me think there might be a hidden problem that must be known before you get one.

I'm just speculating and don't know.

Thanks, I was looking at the same issue but only the 657 engine not the "X" . The SPX has 25 more horsepower than the SPI which is a heck of a lot more power... that I don't need of course but I'm sure I'd use it all.

I am considering a restoration on the SPX and calling it "My Ski"

I purchased a seat, the correct color off ebay after I got the engine to fire. Sure is a limp wristed blue. I will do compression checks and such to determine the engine condition. Is there a way to check the bottom end without pulling it apart ? I will do the fuel and carb system, it would probably run fine after that but I am considering a partial restoration which to me means some components painted, replaced and looking good from 30 feet away. LOL
