95 Seadoo XP lanyard won't stay on

Hello all,

I recently got my first PWC, a 1995 Seadoo XP, and the safety lanyard is driving me crazy. It is a very poor design in my opinion, but I don't know if I am the only one having problems. When I ride it, I attach the lanyard which uses a rubber boot sort of to hold the kill switch down, and sometimes it will stay on for 20 min, other times I cannot go more than 20 feet before it pops off slightly and kills the engine. I bought a new universal one (Jet Logic brand) and it seemed to be better for a day, and then it acted just as bad as the old one. Then, I wrapped electrical tape around the base of the kill switch and it seemed to fit tighter, and worked better for about an hour. Then it kept popping off just as it did prior. This is driving me nuts, and I was wondering if anyone has a good fix which doesn't involve shorting the switch and turning down the idle speed ;-). Thanks in advance.

Come on! These are 13 year old boats!

I actually think the Seadoo lanyards are tough stuff....but they fit loose from the very beginning anyway. Your best bet is to either buy a new lanyard or a new switch - if both are original, this wouldn't really surprise me they don't stay on so well. Also, some people detail their boths and use too much plastic protectant (303, Armor-all, etc) on the button which makes it more slippery.

I bought an aftermarket wrist lanyard which fits much more tightly. But 8 years later (wow that IS a long time when I write it), the lanyard cup is splitting.

A longer wrist lanyard doesn't try to pull off as much as the shorter-tethered stock lanyard. And the longer tether is a must on the side boarding HX models.:reddevil:

Thanks for the input JPX. I don't know whether you saw in my original post, but I have replaced the lanyard. It seemed better for a day or so, but now its just popping off right away again. It almost seems like the peg(button) has too much tension and is pushing up too hard on the cup. Sometimes I will board the craft, put the lanyard cup over the button, and then when I try to start it, the cup has already popped off just slightly sideways. The lanyard I am using now is a Jet Logic aftermarket one(http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wc...=true&storeNum=23&subdeptNum=159&classNum=705).

Any ideas? This is driving me nuts, and it's actually quite dangerous. When I'm at full throttle and it cuts out it nearly throws me over the bars. Thanks.

P.S. My dad has a 96 w/ the DESS key which is much better in my opinion. I think part of it is that it uses electrical contacts instead of a peg button. That way there is no upward pressure on the cup. Is there a newer part I could use to swap out the one on mine? I would really prefer a simple/cheap solution like an o-ring around the button base or tape or something, but ultimately I want something that will be reliable.

no. you are stuck with old style. try wd40 in the hole the push pin slides in. the spring should not get stiffer with age. mebbe just sticky. i think that outside cap can be replaced.
