94 SPI won't idle

I have a 94 SPI that was given to me because it would not turn over. I took it apart and the wrist pin was froze up on one cyclinder. I had the cyclinders bored, replaced pistons, rings and all gaskets on the top end. Now it starts good and will run if you keep the engine reved up but it stalls if you try to let it idle. I have tried to adjust the low speed idle screw with no success

Any ideas what is going on.

1) The timing on the rotary valve could be off.

2) the clearance of the rotary valve can be too large.

3) if you are new to Seadoo's... the idle could be too low. (about 3000 rpm out of the water, 1500 in the water)

When you did the rebuild... did you pressure test the lower half? the crank seals could be leaking.

I have checked the rotary valve twice and the timing seems correct. I will check the valve clearance and the idle rpm's today. When you talk about the seals, are you talking about the front and rear main seals?

I was begining to suspect that I have a air leak that is screwing up the air fuel mix. Anyway thanks for the help and I will check it out.

Yes... but also the center seals. When they leak... oil will be dumped into the crankcase, and can cause issues.

When it started, was there a lot of smoke?

No, it is not smoking when it runs. I checked the rotary valve clearance and it seems OK.

I did find today that if I hold the choke partially out then it will idle, when the choke is released then the motor dies. Still not sure what is going on. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Had a simular problem on a motorcycle..
The bike sat outside for a couple of years before I got it from a neighbor.
The carb nuts were rusted that caused the air leak. I used carb cleaner to find the AIR leak. I would use wd40 or foging oil now.
I hope you find the problem with poorly installed carb gaskets or something easy. The type of problems are going to cost more than time to fix but cost big bucks as pointed out by the DOC in another post.

Good luck

93 XP same issues.

Hey, have the same problem, can't get to idle, will run for like 20 seconds then dies. Have adjusted carbs idle adjustment screws from 1.25 to 2.5 turns out. rebuilt the upper half of engine last year, ran pretty well for about 5 hours, had some hesitation on acceleration, then later it wouldn't idle. Now when it starts there is a lot of smoke for 5-10 seconds. rebuilt carbs this year, still will not idle.

I maybe reading this wrong but It sound like you are turning the wrong screws. IE the mixure on each carb to set the idle.
There is an idle screw that is next to the throtte cable on the carbs.
This is the one screw you should be turning for the idle.

Here is a basic set of questions to think about:
Do you have two carbs?
If so, are they in sync?

If they are out of sync you can have lots of problems with starting, idle and more than I can't think of right now.

This should be the first adjustment checked, are the carbs in sync?

Don't think it is correct because you did not change it, someone
before you could have adjusted it wrong.

It is worth time to rtfm on how to do this adjustment, both of the skis
that I have are done different.

good luck

Two carbs, and I adjusted the low speed mixture screws, didn't mess with the high speed. Did not mess with the sync bar between the carbs, as it worked fine before I had the problem. Dont imagine that the sync bar between the two carbs would change. I was the only person who worked on this ski in 12 years. I did not actually check on the relative throttle plates between the carbs, just assumed it could not change on its own since it was running fine before i blew a piston from a broken oil pump. Rebuilt the top end, not messing with the carbs and it ran OK, but had hesitation while accelerating, big time, but still idled well and had good top end, then it started to not idle for more than 20 or so seconds, no matter what the idle mixture screws were set. Will restart immediately but seems to bog down after the 20 seconds or so. Always have a lot of smoke when it restarts. Rebuilt the carbs according to tfm, even did pop off tests and leakdown, but still has the same symptoms as before the rebuild.

how much pressure should you get from the pulse hose to the fuel pump, seems real low?

Thanks
