Working on getting 1 of 2 1993 XP's 650's running. The one that I am working on will not do anything as far as turning the motor over or trying to start. Hit the start button and nothing. I opened up the electrical box and it is in bad shape. It got water in it and the solenoid and a few other things are rusty. Is there way to test the other components or is it safe to say the box is toast? i have a spare electrical box I can get off my parts XP that looks to be in really good condition. Shoudl I swap them out or try some ways to get the current one working?

Anything I need to be careful of when installing the new one so I don't ruin it or short out anything? Obviously disconnect the battery

yo jeff, first remove the spark plugs, and turn the pto counterclockwise, maybe spray wd-40 down in holes prior, but at least this will letcha no, if motor is locked....
With rust everywhere, dont think anything salvagable in there...

Thanks for the help, Do you mean nothing in the electrical box is salvageable if it has been wet with part rusted?

The motor turns over by hand fine. I sprayed some 2 stroke oil in the cylinders last night. I have an electrical box from the parts seadoo that looks perfect, I will go ahead and do the swap on the boxes. Hopefully I can make some progress with the box swap.

any other tips to get this thing running? I would like to get the starter working so I can at least check compression before I get any further into the project. Thanks again for your response!

With charged battery, and leav'n plugs out, with plug wires on grounding post, can jump the starter relay/solenoid, and if starter turns, then its good, then, hook up compression tester, take gander., only if you still cant get power to starter, after switch'n relays. That can be later post...

Ok, got a new battery and got the electrical box swapped out. Motor turns over and I checked compression. About 165 on each cylinder so that loooked really good. I know the carbs need to come off and get rebuilt. Any tips on checking stator to see if it is good? I was told that it was bad but now I am thinking that the electrical box problems might have been the issue?

Sounds like, you have grasp on install/remove of engine and other stuff. I'd clean carbs and fire ur up, and/or check for spark,..

Your question from other forum

I noticed your forum on the general area about premixing your gas/oil. I will pass on what I know. I have read that to really treat the engine well mixing your own fuel is the way to go. The oil pumps are sending little if any oil at idle speeds which isn't the end of the world but anytime the engine is lacking oil could be bad.
