92 GTX fuel gauge

The gauge on my 92 GTX doesn't work. I am having trouble getting information on how to diagnose whether it's the sending unit or the gauge. Can anybody give me some input on how to check the gauge with a meter and what I should be looking for? I want to be absolutely positive it isn't the gauge before I start removing the sending unit (I will put that off till its back on the stand in the garage for the winter).

Common issue,,eventually the F1 fuse on the vertical printed fuel baffle pickup fails,,the fix is to just short it out,..you will find at least a the couple threads on the process,,,the gauge rarely fails,,,
