3500 rpm limiter on one motor

97 speedster 720 motors. I was running wot on a rare glass smooth water day and the stbd engine cut to 3500 rpm. My first thought was overheating and safety kicked on. The following week I took it out and the stbd motor is still triggering the 3500 rpm limiter. Neutral switch is fine because the port motor revs normal and neither motor will crank when the shifter is out of neutral. I plugged the wiring harness and plug wires from the port engine into the stbd engine and got the same result, 3500 limit. So, now that I think I've narrowed it down to a problem at the motor will a bad temp sensor or stator cause this symptom?

Do a search for how to check if your rectifier is bad, when they let go, they output erratic or ac voltage which screws with the mpem. I think you disconnect either the red or yellow wire. This is not a long term solution though as it won't be getting charge for the battery from that motor.

Thanks strizzo, I cleaned the pins to the motor wiring plug and spayed electrical parts cleaner into the neutral safety switch. It now seems to be revving normally, I just need to get it on the water to make sure.

I resolved it, it was the Neutral safety switch. Not sure why it only limited 1 motor but it works now. Also resolved a cavitation issue I had by moving the bellows boot forward about 1/2". I took it out last weekend and it just flew across the water.
