Just bought a 01 Speedster with the 240 Merc in it. First time out on the weekend and it wouldn't start after an hour of use on the lake. Battery seemed shot, so while putting a new battery in we noticed the throttle cable bracket broke off the engine. There is a hole in the block and what looks like the flywheel is visible. Any ideas what could have caused this and an inexpensive solution.

The flywheel is on the top of the engine with the M2, so I'm having a hard time trying to visualize what you're referring to. Also if you have the early production 240 you have a stator under the flywheel that charges the battery, and if something got under there it may have damaged it (newer 240's have an alternator).

When you replace the battery run the engine on the hose, and check voltage at the battery with a multimeter. Should be around 13.5 volts.
