First post: I'm considering buying the 2005 sportster and the guy from Quebec who is selling mentioned he was told it needed a kit for the shaft but he has no idea of the part or what is involved. He was told by someone that was looking at it. Can anyone's shed some insight as to what he may be referring to,what may be needed and the potential cost.

Thanks in advance for any help.

without more information it is hard to say, not really sure what a 'drive shaft kit' is?

If it is referring to the drive shaft seal assembly, cost is not too much if you can do the work yourself. Obviously, having a dealer do anything is going to drive cost up considerably. You can look up the parts diagram, at the worst you may need a new SS Ring, o-rings, carbon seal, and bellows. All together that should not cost more than about $200. Even if you need a new driveshaft (did mine last year) they are under $200 for a good aftermarket one. There is also a special tool you need which runs about $100 aftermarket. If it needs other propulsion work with the jet pump assembly things can get a bit more pricey.

If you get more detailed information we can give you more detailed advice...

I am ASSUMING they mean the Carbon Seal. Which rides on the shaft so to speak. It is what keeps water from entering the hull.

FWI. 2004 to mid 2006 have Sodium Filled exhaust valves. These can fail and cause serious engine damage. That said, they fail rarely in the boats as they simple are not driven as hard and at such high RPMs as compared to the skis. Non-Super Charged engines are even a lower failure rate.

And,,, boat engines are a year behind. So if you have a 2005 boat, you will have a 2004 engine.
