2003 utopia starter

hey i have a 2003 utopia that i just bought this year. its my first boat so i dont know much about them. i was on the water this week and went to start up my boat and it seemed like it didnt have enuogh power to crank it, i tried it a few more times and the starter sounded like it broke loose and was just making a noise like when you try to start your car when its already running. i got back to dock and checked the motor and the starter was not lined up properly with the flywheel or whatever its called on a boat. does anybody know what the problem could be?
