My sister in law bought a 2003 GTI LE. It runs great but will not go over 35 MPH. It seems like there is a governor on it restricting the top speed. Does anyone know how to fix this. She is not using a learning key.
Thanks,
Budman

Montana...isn't it a bit chilly to be on the water...lol Does it have new properly gaped spark plugs? What is the compression of the engine? If you haven't done a compression test, I would start there.
Let me know if you need information on how to do a compression test properly and I'll post it.

I have been watching the ice everyday. Soon.... Very soon.
Thanks for the info. We will check the compression and plugs.
Do you know how fast this ski should go? It is stock and only has 25 hours on the clock. It starts easy and the acceleration is good but the top speed just isn't there. It goes about the same speed as my old wore out 94 Kawasaki 750. seems like should be faster.

Thats what I thought but the dealer said the key was not a learning key. I don't trust the seadoo dealer here. At first they had never even heard of a learning key. They looked into it and found out what it is. Also there 02 RXDI with only 29 hrs. seized up. I asked the dealer if the oil pump may have went out. He said "These seadoos don't have oil pumps." I said this ski is oil injected how does the oil get into the engine? He didn't have an answer. They have no explanation on why the engine seized up. But they are happy to charge $1000.00 to fix it.
Maybe the GTI-LE is just not a fast ski. But we are open to all suggestions.
Thanks for the replies.

Budman You need to post the ski information in you avatar for future problems so we don't have to roll back to a previous post to find it. I believe that that seadoo should be running close to 50mph if memory serves me right. Do a compression test and repost back. That is a base to start with.I would do a compression test to see what is going on internally.
Here is some information on doing a compression test properly.
You'll need a compression tester. Go to Auto Zone. I think they sell for like $25.00. The compression gage, will screw in the cylinder head in place of the spark plugs. To test compression, remove both spark plugs. Place spark plug caps on the plug cap studs near the cylinder head to ground the empty caps. This completes the circuit of the ignition electrical system and prevents any electrical problems from the caps being un grounded. Using the correct adapter for the threaded end of the tester,( same length of the spark plug threads length)screw in the tester in one plug hole. Hold the throttle wide open. Push the start button. Watch the compression guage, when it peaks out at the most compression, let go the start button. Read the psi number. I would do it 3 times to be sure it is accurate. Check both cylinders the same way. The ideal compression is 150 psi per cylinder. If it is less, it's not a problem as long as they are close to being the same. If the psi is less than 90 it might need be time for a tear down and a rebuild. If the psi in 1 cylinder is say 140 psi and the other is 80 psi you need to tear down and repair. This difference is a lot then there is a problem.
I hope this helps you.

I would stay as far away from that dealer as possible, that's total incompetance!!! They can't be a SeaDoo dealer, right?

What RPMs is the boat reaching at max speed? You may have a pump problem if it truly runs great. I wouldn't expect the compression to be low with that low of hours, but you never know. Does it seem to over rev when getting up to speed. Check compression, change plugs, ride it with a careful ear and let us know.

All 2 stroke seadoos have an oil pump!!! that's amazing...

Is the DESS key yellow? White is the learning key.

thanks for the reply. My brother in law dropped both of the seadoos off at that dealer on saturday. There are no other seadoo dealers in this area. The rxdi is going to get a complete rebuild. And they are going to tune up the GTI-LE. They bought both of these used last summer. They both are in great shape and have about 25 Hour on them. They only road the 02RXDI about 20 minutes before the engine went out. And the GTI-LE will only go 35. The seller would not give them a refund. They told the dealer that if they are going to rebuild the rxdi they should warranty there work. They are not sure about giving them a warranty. Its been a bad deal from the start. The trailer is really nice though. When they are finished with the ski and his wallet I will report back.
