Just bought this boat last spring. Very clean, always dealer serviced, with 70 hours on it. Only put about 10 hours on it this summer, it ran great!----Until the last ride I took when it just quit like the safety switch was pulled out. Long story-short, lost compression in the front cylinder. Took the top end apart and it looks like maybe a ring hooked an exhaust port. Looks like most of it went out the exhaust because the rave valve has some damage too. The good news is that the cylinder isn't too bad, should get by with a bore, and piston kit. Just wondering if anyone else has had this type of problem, or if it was "one in a million" and I was the lucky one. From what I've heard, the 787 is supposed to be a pretty reliable motor. Thanks, Marty.

Oil pump...

You don't say whether or not you still use the oil injection system or the oil pump. I'd check the oil pump for proper operation.

What did the top of the cylinder look like? Was it smooth or did it look like some "BB's" where trapped in it. If so, then you may have suffered a break down from detonation.

Remember, if you bore one, you have to bore the other. Your best bet may be to go with a new upper end. Spend the money, get it over with. You can find a complete upper end kit for about $400 bucks at SBT online.

Yes, the oil injection was hooked up-everything is stock, though these new watercraft sure don't seem to use much oil. The top of the cylinder did look like alot of shrapnel had hit it. The marks looked like something sharp had hit the head repeatedly. Showed the parts to some local engine guys, they didn't seem to think it was a lack of oil, said the intake side of piston and cylinder looked too good. Just their opinion. I'm still going to check the oil system though. I'm also going to do both holes-usually do since it's apart. I'm not familiar with SBT. Who are they, and does that kit come with everything I need for the complete top end? Thanks again, Marty.

Quick update

I found SBT on the net and ordered the top end kit. They were great to work with. Fast shipping, and I thought very reasonably priced. Put it back together today, and was able to throw it in the river for a test ride. Not many 60 degree days in November in northern Minnesota, but the water was a bit chilly! I think that front cylinder had problems all along, because it never started or idled as good as it did today. I can hardly wait for spring! Well, I have to winterize it tomorrow, they're talking snow and ice by the weekend. Thanks for the help. Marty

detonation.....

From your description of all the sharpnel hits........

The dings, if they looked like a bunch of BB's had been in the piston, that is the tell tale of "detonation". You can do a google and find info on it.

I'd probably watch that front cylinder for a while. Unless you know what caused it (which detonation is caused from several different things) you may have it happen again. Your cooling water flow across the top of the cylinder is to provide some protection from this happening.
