So there is a 2002 Sea Doo GTX on Craigslist with 180 hours on with a bad motor for $1500 including trailer. Is there anything special in rebuilding this motor? I know I can rebuild it for about $400 and was wondering if people thought it would be worth it to purchase?

Well first of all any ski with a blown engine is not worth anything more than $500 in my opinion.

Second of all you will never be able to rebuild it for $400.

If it is a DI ski run the other direction.

So a 951 with a 180 hour blown engine has a 99.99% chance of needing a new crank and balancer if it isn't already thrown through the cases.

Crank is $375 minimum.
Balancer $100 in bearings and seals.
Gasket Kit $85
Pistons $100 each.
$125 to bore cylinders.
$50 piston pin bearings.
$75 new reeds
$25 for sealants
$100 for carb rebuild kits if this is a carb ski.

So you are at $1135 minimum if you do all the work yourself. I say minimum because you will spend more than this and find other little things here and there that drive the price up quickly.

This is why I say no more than $500 because now you have a minimum of $1,700 into a ski that is not worth much more than this.

Is that the Green & White one near Appleton? Thats been for sale for a while. I love the DI's but they are not a simple engine by any stretch. :) That's a 2500 ski on a good day, most DI's will cost 1000 in parts to rebuild them correctly, so that why its not selling. Nothing but risk & good chance of loosing money on that one. Looking for a winter project?

Really Not Sure, Being a DI, very Possibly a fuel issue that made it run lean. So after the rebuild the new owner gets to figure out what took it down in the first place. If the hull was in better shape it might be a $500-$750 machine. $1500 is way too much as is.

Cold seized is when the engine is run too hard too fast and the pistons expand faster than the cylinders and they get stuck and seize.

I have never heard of this happening on a stock ski so it is very unlikely especially if you know all of the other things that kill DI seadoo's.

Price Drop at $1300 :D

Update 2002 SeaDoo GTX 951 Direct Injection

I wish he would just dump this thing for the $500 that it "might" be worth. So tired of seeing it on CL

Although, I probably shouldn't be looking this year anyway. Fisnihed two project 4tec's last summer & have a busy summer coming up. But its so hard to not watch what comes up for sale though. These skis are so addicting.
