2002 rx revs fine out of water but not in water

I just bought a 2002 rx (carb model). I assumed it would have some problems because it was last registered in 2008 and I managed to get it for only $450 with the trailer(guy thought the motor was locked up).

Anyway, I got it running just by putting a new battery in it. I tested the battery and it didn't have enough power to spin the starter. After the new battery, it cranked but would not start for a while. After messing with it and putting new gas and a can of BG 44k in it, it started and then died. After a few more times it would start and idle. So obviously there was some trash in the fuel system that had to get cleaned out.

Now the problem is in the water, it won't go past about 3,400 rpm. Out of the water it is fine. Also, it seems real slow mph and acceleration wise, even for that rpm. First I need to figure out the rpm problem though, if we fix both great.

I have done some searching but nobody seems to reply when they are done and have fixed the problem.

So far I have done this:

Plugs are brand new ngk br8es
Rave valves have been cleaned
Compression tested fine at 142 and 143.5
I have great spark
Carb jets are clean but not sure about the rest of the carbs
Engine will bog when spraying supplemental fuel into th airbox (even at wot)

The reason I didn't take the carbs completely apart is because I have never messed with carbs before. The one main jet was completely plugged but is fine now. I plan on taking them apart now as I don't know what else it could be, it just seemes odd that it might be that when it bogged with supplemental fuel added.

Thanks for any help.

I've had a bogging issue with my XP for a few weeks though mine is intermittent. Yours sounds like a fuel issue but don't rule out electrical. I would first take the carbs off and go through them completely. It will be a good learning experience for you and theres plenty of experts on the site if you have a question. Also need to be sure your fuel lines, water seperator/filter and selector switch are clean. If that doesn't solve it, might be something electrical. How do you know it has good spark?

Did you replace the grey fuel lines? That can pug up a carb filter with the brap of the throttle. I agree with getreal, you need to go through the carbs properly, make sure the needle and seats are good and do a pop off test.

If you are not comfortable doing it yourself, send them to DrHonda, he does outstanding work at a resonible price. Once the carbs are done properly and the fuel system is gone over, (replace grey lines, filters, and ad inline filter) you will get many years out of those rebuilt carbs. Make sure to use stabil once in a while through out the season and at the end of the season.

For $200 more you could have had all new carbs.

$400 new, minus $100 sell your old ones, minus the $100 you spent.

I got tired of rebuilding them... I buy new, new jets, and know they will work.

Once you r/r the lines, make sure you clean out the selector valve and at a minimum the filters in the carbs.

Well that didn't fix anything. Still won't rev past about 3,400rpm. Carbs are fully rebuilt, all the fuel lines are new, and cleaned out the selector switch. So, I guess I just wasted that $100 on the rebuild kits.

That sucks, but all the things you did were good for the ski. I feel for you because I have the same condition on my XP but it's only intermittent. The dealer replaced the selector switch, the fuel baffle, and the stator on mine and it seemed to fix the problem for awhile, but I still have issues.

Wish I could tell you what to do next, but I'm at a loss as well. Hopefully some of the more experienced guys will give you some feedback after I bump this back to the top!

My buddy was having a sluggish bogging problem this weekend..... Its probably not the most Ideal of solutions.... But try putting BR9s into your ski. They burn a little hotter. It cleared his bogging problem right up. If you could just get it going and beat on it for a bit with the 9s and get the cobwebs off you could probably switch back to the 8s. IMO 2 strokes just need a little beating sometimes.

Yea that's what I hoping with my XP. Rode it today and had no bogging!

I figured it out a couple weeks ago. Part of the reed valves were broke. Replaced then tested and she flew, for about ten minutes. Then I let off to slow down due to an oncoming no wake zone and the motor shut off instantly. I tried restarting a couple times and all I got was the starter trying to turn the motor but couldn't. So I jumped in and swam it to the boat ramp a little over 1/4 mile away (good thing I workout). Got it to the house and found the bearing locked up in the jet pump.

That's too bad but the bearings must of been bad or the oil was gone. Are you going to repair yourself?

I already fixed it, took about 10 minutes to get it apart. It needed a new shaft and all though. Found a local that had all new parts, including housing, for $200. It was obvious the bearings have been going bad a while.

The Reed valve fixed it for good? Having same issue.
Out of water rev with no problems. In water would not pass 3450 to 3500 rpms. About 10 mph.
