2002 GTX DI, I'm going to rebuild the engine

Ok, so I took it in to the shop to see what was wrong because it wouldnt stay running for more than 30 seconds. They told me that one of the cylinders is down to only 100lbs compression and should be at 150. They said it would be $3500 to $4000 to fix, thats half what I paid for it back in 2002! So there is no way I can afford that. My idea: I'll do it myself, with the help of my friend. What are your suggestions? Where can I get the detailed engine manual with step by step how to rebuild the engine? I'm aiming to start this project in 3 weeks, and I'm going to set aside 3 days non stop to do it.

Go to www.sbtontheweb.com or call 1-877-330-0231 toll free. When that page opens, look on the top left hand side of the page and select to shop by make/model.

Your new OEM remanafactured engine will cost you $1895 with a 2 year no fault warranty or $1595 with a 1 year warranty. You'll get 10 days from the time your new engine gets to your house to take all the parts of your motor and put on the new one before you have to ship it back.
You get the complete long block motor. You'll have to put your magneto, DI injection system, flywheel, starter, ...etc, then you'll be off to the water!........

Now, how much easier can it be than that.......

Yup, I already looked at that website and it seems like a good deal. Accept.. I don't have $1500 for a new engine (I'm a totally broke college student), I have $500 for a rebuild kit, and I have a lot of time on my hands. I will sign up to be premium member here for help, and to get the manual. Can you point me toward a good rebuild kit?
 
What you might want to do is see what you really need to rebuild... are the cylinders scored or just in need a honing and rings...or does it need to be slightly bored out with pistons, rings with gaskets and cylinder "0" rings. you need to tear it down and check it out if you going to do it yourself. It is easier to remove the engine to make things easier. If you want you could join as a "premium member". As a premium member you can down load a authentic seadoo manual from the seadoo manual library. In the library is a variety of manuals for almost all years and models. You can view as many as you like on line as a PDF file, or download it and print it for your personal and privet use. There are operator manuals and repair manuals for you to do your own repairs on your seadoo. The repair manuals have everything from troubleshooting, repair procedures to winterizing. It contains wire diagrams torque specs and pictures for disassemble and assemble instructions. In the spec sheets it tells everything needed to maintain oil changes, spark plug gaps, carburetor rebuilds and impeller wear ring tolerances. Click on the "Seadoo Manuals" link at the top of the page for more details. If you need any help or get in a jam, we are always here to answer your questions too.

Half a rebuild?

I'm sorry, but $500 bucks will allow you to do about half the rebuild. What I'm saying is, with these high tech engines, you can't go in and selectively pick what your gonna build and what your not. It'll never last.

Now, if you've got a shot compressor or bad injectors, then you may be able to rebuild/replace these kind of items. But just a crank kit is $475 and the upper end is $305.....so, like Karl said, if your compression is shot, you can get a new upper end including the necessary parts and gaskets to re-sleeve your cylinders for $305..........but the little odds and ends will probably go over your budget.

Maybe you can just put her away till you save up for a new motor.........just a though. I know, that's not facing reality. You've got that little voice in your head screamin "I want to go for a ride!".........

Ok, you talked me into it, I'll order the motor with the 2 year warranty. I also tried to sign up for the premium membership here but I'm not sure if it went through or not, the paypal thing was confusing. Is there anything else that I would need to buy other than that motor?
 
I have rebuilt a few engines in my life. but this engine scares me, and I will tell you why. If I do not know positivly what caused engine to loose compression I would be afraid it could hapen again. these are two cycles engines and the fuel and air ratio have to be correct. On the di model I would be afraid that I might not get it correct. It would probbly seem to run good when new engine is installed but if it is runing a little lean on any part of the throtal scale it may end up right back where you are at now. All I am trying to say is research every thing that could cause this problem and any thing that you may think needs to be addresed. this may insure a long life of your new engine. do not run it unless engine is runing perfect or you may be suprised at the damage you can be causeing. :cheers:

Unfortunetly i had the same problem with my jetski last season, well it seems to be the same explination, if you've had it on the water and you give it gas does it just die out? well i took the spark plugs out of mine and water game flying out of them like a jet stream, i also check the compression and it wasn't where it should be, turned out i gave it to a my friends dad's buddy and water had got into the oil pan amoung numerous other things rods were bent. it cost me i believe 1400 including labor to rebuild and recive a new oil pan.
 
"root cause"....

Robin is very correct on this. If you dont find the root cause as to why that cylinder dropped to 100 psi on the compression, then you may be throwing your money into the wind.

With this engine being a 2002 model, then you shouldn't have lost a cylinder like that without cause. Unless you just dogged the crap out of it all the time without doing at least the bare minimum in maintenance.
 
So the problem might not be the engine, it could something else that caused the engine to loose compression? What else could it be? The injector system? PS I got an $11 charge on my card for this month, but my account on here doesn't seem to be reflecting my purchase of the membership.
 
Sometimes the paypal doesn't let the charge go through for a couple days while your charge card might have been on the same day as it's ending cycle. How many days ago has it been since you signed up for you membership? I'll ask the admin to look into it and I'll post you an answer.

No, at this point, the engine does need to be replaced or rebuilt. But the point Robin made is, why did it happen. So, when you get that engine and you get your premium service in place, go to the DI system and do the checks on the injectors, the compressors and the RAVE's (which operate from your compressor) to find out, what if anything caused the failure of this piston. It's not to say you have a "root cause", the cylinder could have just gotten weak and gave way, but it's something you need to look into. To make sure you don't repeat this problem after the new engine is in place. Look into your oil injection lines. Maybe the one going to that cylinder is plugged. Those kind of things.


Also, check your email box. I believe when I spoke to staff about this problem before, they said you have a confirmation email sent to your email account that is used for activation. So, give it a check. If not, PM hfgreg or joez for help.

You do have one very good thing going for you. You have a 2 year no fault warenty. Worst case you have two years to get it right, and the first time that you had a problem I would think they would tell you the cause of the failure so they did not have to keep giveing you engines. :cheers:
