Hi, I posted a long write up in the trouble shooting section, but maybe I should have posted here. I have a 2002 explorer with a 717. It has an arieltek mpem (no white/grey wire for dess post). 2 beeps when I put on key. Then when I hit the start button it cranks for 1 sec then loses power. I pulled the plug from the mpem to the solenoid and it reads 11.67v as long as I hold the button down. Does this mean I have a bad solenoid?
I can copy and paste from my other thread if needed.
Thanks in advance for any help.

well, first off, take a test light, while cranking, check voltage at main 12v wire at solenoid, then at signal wire , that supplies 12v to solenoid (the small guage wire) if you continue to get a voltage at the signal wire, your solenoid would be bad, (provided all your grounds are good)

That's what I think. I have cleaned all connections, and I am getting 12v at main and signal wire even after it stops cranking, untill I release the start switch.
I checked compression by jumping the solenoid, and I have 120 front 35 rear. I just got the engine unlocked and am thinking that the rings will break loose after I get spark and get it to start.

If I jump the solenoid with the lanyard on should I be getting spark?

Yes... if the lanyard is on... you should get spark.

As far as the 120/35.... that engine is done. Rings don't stick in a 2 stroke, unless the piston melted over them.

Thanks Tony it is good to know I should be getting spark. I can at least try to diagnose the spark problem now. As for the engine you are probably right. For what I paid for the boat I can rebuild or replace the engine.

Hi Tony the boat sat in a garage with the plugs out for a year. The rear piston was at TDC while the front was all the way down. I unlocked the engine, but isn't it possible the rear is low on compression because the rings were compressed and rusted in place on the piston? I have seen this before on quads due to the cylinder walls being tighter at the top. What do you think?
