Hello all, new poster-long time lurker.

I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I have spent way to many hours in the engine bay on this boat. :banghead: Will try my best to keep it short, but still include all the info

The boat is a 2001 Seadoo Sportster LE with a 951 carbed, was purchased used with a blown engine. Purchased an SBT engine for replacement, got the engine in, everything looked good except the stator had two burnt poles and both 15amp fuses were burnt. I went against my better judgement, put two new fuses in the boat, and tried to start. Fired right up without a problem.

Very happy at that point of time I decided to drop her in the water and give the boat a go. Well, put it in the water, pushed the start button and nothing happened. Took a look both 15amp fuses burned out. Replaced the fuses, pushed the start both fried again. Pulled the boat back out of the water and towed it home.

In the garage I did some tests, by unplugging the stator and turning on power. No fuses were burned until I plugged the stator back in. Confirmed my problem was one of the poles so ultimately fried stator. Here is where it goes down hill. lol

Ordered used stator, bench tested ok. Put it into the ski, replaced the fuses that burned and hit the key. No fuses burned and the engine did not crank. So now its got me thinking I either have a neutral safety switch issue, start button issue or perhaps starter solienoid?

Here is what works:
-Gauges
-All accessories : blower, lights etc

Tested following
-Bridged the two poles and boat cranks
-Battery tests out ok
-Grounds appear good and even removed and reattached hoping something else was causing an issue.
-Lanyard beeps twice (like it had prior)

At this point I am puzzled. New stator is in, the burnt fuse issue is resolved. However, now I can not get the engine to crank. Any thoughts? Could it be the MPEM and not neutral saftety switch, start button, or start solienoid?

Thank you all for your insight and prompt responses!

Unfortunately... continually installing fuses with a known problem... and I'm guess you roasted the MPEM.

You knew the stator was bad, and the charging fuse(s) were blown. you should have stopped the engine install, and the stator should have been replaced, along with the regulator. (If the stator smoked, the regulator normally goes too)

I wish I could give you better news, or something to check... but seadoo MPEM's are fragile, and are known to burn up with a simple jump-start, or bad motor in a VTS system.

Oh wow, I guess I should have known better. Thanks for your input. I know there are tests that can be run to prove the MPEM is cooked on older Skis, are there any tests for this specific MPEM?

Just out of curiousity, what else would stop the engine from cranking on this boat?

Thanks

Thanks again Tony, when you say regulator are you reffering to the rectifier? If so, it doesnt appear the 2001 sportster LE has it? Im assuming it might also be built into the MPEM. Is that correct?

Well Tony,

I figured I could give you a good laugh, if not some of the other folks on here. Was thinking about the boat on the way home from work... then it dawned on me...

Oh to be so foolish. I failed to remember the fact that after I put the pump back together, I never put the boat back in neutral. DUH!!! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Put her in neutral, turned on the juice, two beeps, push the button and she fires up without a problem!

Anyways, just wanted to say thanks and also ensure to document the root cause. In which this case, may save others from lots of wrench turning for no reason.

WOW!!! lucky you!

Yes............. Very lucky !!!! But, I'm glad you have a happy ending.

Yes... on your MPEM... the regulator/rectifier could be internal of the MPEM.

One question. If you were still in forward... you would have gotten an error beep(s). Didn't that happen before?

No error beeps believe it or not. Which is quite puzzling. Just the two beeps every time. Im really puzzled on that one.

Tomorrow I shall put it in the water and see what happens. I know the boat was taken on a little water which I believe is from a missing oring in the siphon tube... Im assuming the siphon was working the opposing way. Replaced that, so we shall see what happens.

Thanks again guys!

Tony,
Couple more questions for you; if you dont mind. Took the boat out.. appears to run great with no cavitation. I see water in two places, definitely not coming from the bailer/siphon any more. However, the 90 degree in the line that goes back to the end of the boat has a small hold in the plastic piece/elbow.. Is that normal? I can definitely see water coming from the drive shaft and I am assuming it is the carbon seal or rubber o-rings. Or is it possible from moving the engine around, the things need to be reseated again?

Any thoughts?

Thanks.
