2001 Seadoo RX 951 carb

Good Morning All,

I did something most likely stupid, but that's nothing new. I purchased a blown up 01 RX with carbed 951. Found it on Facebook marketplace, Took an 8 hour round trip drive Saturday to see it. Was told it only needed a top end rebuild. Started looking it over, everything is where it should be. Previous owner had someone pop off the jugs, that's where I found the missing PTO connecting rod. Was supposed to buy for $400, but after finding the carnage, got the owner down to $200. Couldn't resist it. This is my first 951 and rebuild. So here's my questions. I'm going to pull the pump and motor this Saturday and tear it down at home in the basement. I'm not trying to set any land speed records for getting this rebuilt before the season is over here in MD. What would you guys do, get crank rebuilt or replace new? New Balance Shaft. The top end I'm not worried about right now as that's one of the last pieces to this puzzle. I plan on adding Pro K's with outer wears, rejet carbs and new impeller/wear ring while doing the rebuild. I have 7 months from now to rebuild and break in the rebuilt motor before our yearly trip to Daytona.

Thanks for any and all info/help
Pat

Run the stock air cleaner. You will not get any performance from AM air cleaners and the 951 can't have any water ingestion.

Yes, new crank, balancer rebuild and reeds.

Just rebuilt my 2001 xp. I had to do both the bottom end and top end. The piston rod bearing exploded. All the pins where in the bottom of the engine. This caused the piston to catch and bent the piston rod. Pure carnage, I went the road of buying a new crank with all the bearings and piston rods and new .5 over pistons and rings. Luckily the cylinder walls where good enough to bore over. Also my counter balance was perfectly fine. Seems like they never tried to run it again just put it back on the trailer and left it. Paid 400 for mine but everything was there. Had a bit of carb setup issues along with new throttle cable but thanks to members here I was able to get it running perfect. It runs like a scolded dog now. If I was to do it again I would consider on buying just a new or rebuilt engine. By the time it’s all said and done. The crank will cost you 699 plus all the pistons and rings you will be around 900 bucks for an extra 300 you can get a new engine and save you all the headache of pulling the old one apart. But if it’s a winter project I enjoyed rebuilding mine. Just my two cents

I don't think those are still available, every dealer that I called said they weren't doing the rebuilds anymore.

They still show as available.

These are not rebuilt at the dealership or parts. These are a complete ready to install crankshaft from Seadoo.

Yes, by "they" I meant Sea-Doo, all the dealers I called said Sea-Doo was no longer remanufacturing those cranks. I know all the online parts places still show them as "available" though which seems to be a mistake.

I'm finishing up on a 2000 RX with the same issues you have. LOL Guy said, "I didn't winterize it and the engine is stuck. I'm sure if you put some WD 40 in there you can free it up. It's a great ski... rode it last year... :D:D ", you can check out my thread 2000 Millennium RX . It might help. I have a R&D head I don't plan on using if you are interested. It's in great shape. I can't wait to get mine on the water... I'm planning on next week now.... sheesh I'm so busy. :) Here is a pic of the engine after I took a torch to the connecting rod to get it apart. LOL 200 RX Engine Bottom End.JPEG

Got the engine torn out Saturday morning. Licked my wounds for a minute there. Cases are trashed and took out 1 reed cage/valve. Already picked up good used cases and reed cages/valves. I'm going to take my sweet time with this over the winter and get it done.
