OK so my wife's aunt and uncle had two skis they were haven't used in a while. A 1995 SeaDoo GTS and a 1996 Yamaha Wave Venture 700 along with a two place shoreland'r trailer. The Yamaha started right up but had no power when we put it in the water. I have the carbs off and will rebuild them. The GTS took a little more work to get running and also needed a handlebar pad. Got it running and put it in the water and it seems to be ok. The Yamaha is better cosmetic condition and hopefully rebuilding the cards solves the no power issue. (It has 150 psi compression in both cylinders.)

Today we at the lake and the neighbor I sold my golf cart to last year has a 2001 SeaDoo GTX RFI with 78 hours for sale. I looks fantastic almost like new. Now the wife wants me to get that one and sell one of the others. Its comes with a Shoreland'r single place trailer. So whats something like that worth. I looked it up on NADA and it said $2790 with the trailer and a cover. He is asking $4200 which I think is high. I'm thinking I could get a new 4 stroke for that money.

But the main question is how reliable are these. Any major issues with them. How does the Fuel Injection compare to Carbs as far as maintenance?

If I get the Yamaha going I would sell the GTS if I pick up this GTX RFI.

Not sure where you're located but to me $4200 is way to high. I picked up an 01 GTX RFI, 107 total hours, 7 hours on complete rebuilt engine for $2600 with trailer and cover this spring. When I went to insure it they would only insure it for $2200. If the guy is reasonable tell him what you found and see what he says.
This is my 4th or 5th RFI. The biggest problem I've seen is the rectifier going bad. The RFI's are better on fuel than the carb'd engines.

Thanks for the input. Why did it need a motor rebuild at 100 hours? Is that normal?

Lack of maintenance by PO and they some how they got water into the cylinders. The water sat in the cylinders and around the crank and rusted things up. The person that did the rebuild is a friend and has a small shop doing PWC repairs. He thinks they tried to flush the ski and shut the water off before they shut the ski off. I would say a rebuild at 100 hours is not normal.

4200 is high, you're talking almost a 4tec GTX at that money. I'd want to see the number start with a 2, maybe a 3.

Ya that's what I was thinking. He is asking $4200 with a like new Shorelnd'r trailer and a lift. He said he was offered $3700 with out the lift and turned it down. From what I have read I am not sure I want a 4tec. I sure don't want something I have to have a supercharger rebuilt every 100 hours. I like to work on them my self and have read the 4 strokes are harder to work on. I thinking I like the fuel injected 2 cycle. Convince me why I would want a 4tec.

Ok so I picked up the 2001 GTX RFI. Wife took it for a test ride before we bought it. Ran great she had it up to 58 mph. She brought it back and we put it on the lift. Every on got ready to go out on the lake. Wife took it back out with my daughter. The got about 1/2 mile down the lake and lost power. Would only run 5 mph. My daughter got on the boat and wife was taking it in. She started back up and it would go ~30 mph. She said she hit a big wave and again it dropped to 5 mph. Got it on the lift while still in the water it will only rev to 3200 rpm. Cranked it up and revs past 6000 rpm. 79 hours on machine. Any thoughts?

I would check your rectifier. They are a known issue on the RFI skis. Unfortunately you bought a ski that is fuel injected and not easy to diagnose. griz400 knows a lot about these skis

These skis also have a "limp mode" if the computer throws a code. You will need the buds system or can doo I believe to read these.
You might want to change your filter and look into new injectors or having yours cleaned

I have no idea on that honestly. I would assume if the computer throws a code out that the maint light would appear

Ok so I put new plugs in it and it is fine again. I'll have to see if it continues to fowl plugs. PO told he normally replaces the plugs each spring.
