Just bought a 2001 GTI about a month and a half ago. Haven't had a chance to take it out yet. Went to start it up last night and it engages the starter but doesn't turn the engine over. When I had it checked out by a local dealership they mentioned that the battery was weak. I checked voltage on the battery and it is only 11.5V. Will a weak battery prevent the engine from turning over? The starter turns but the engine doesn't.

Thanks a lot

Low Voltage is a problem

I have a 98 GSX and I was having problems with battery due to a bad stator assembly. Your battery should have 12.3 volts and if it drops much below that you can have problems with it starting. I can tell you not to ever buy a battery at Wallmart! I went through several then bought a good battery at an Auto Parts store and it holds up much better. You might also want to remove the spark plugs and see if the engine turns over. You may have water in the cylinders which causes hydrolock.
