2000 xp 951 top end rebuild

if i decide to rebuild the top end of my 2000 xp do i have to take the motor out to do it, or can it be done inside the hull.
 
Inside....

You can do this inside the ski. Just make sure that after you pull the cylinders, you stuff rags inside the casing at the connecting rods. That way, you'll ensure you don't drop any foreign objects into the crank area.:cheers:
 
Studs?....

Yes, the cylinders are bolted, not studded. So, when you remove the bolts, the cylinders pull off the pistons. You'll need to read the manual on this installation or ask about how you align them. You'll have to bring in the cylinders and exhaust manifold all at the same time to make sure you have the bolt pattern alignment with each other. If you put the heads on and cylinders on and tighten them, you may not get all your bolts in on the exhaust manifold. So, you'll need to follow the sequence on doing this procedure.:cheers:
 
I find it easier to remove the engine. If you do it in hull, you will have to remove the studs as the cylinders will not clear them. Actually, either way you will have to remove the studs first. It's a lot easier to install the cylinders on the bench. No need to use the exhaust manifold for line up as the cylinders are not separate.

Here's a helpful tip on the 951 xp cylinder...

Here's a trick to remove the 951 cylinder out of an xpl hull easily without fighting the studs.

Remove head, then unscrew the 8 studs using a stud wrench(the old double nut method works too but takes awhile) but don't remove them, pull them out about an inch and then using 4 rubberbands, tie them to each other. This puts tension on them so they don't slip down and get in your way when removing the cylinder. Then, just tilt the cylinder a little and pull it straight out with one hand, the other hand will catch the pistons so they don't bang the case. That's it.

It also works well for reassembling as well.
 
seadoosnipe is thinking of a different motor.

those studs are long, and they have an o-ring on them in the middle which sometimes holds them in place, but other times they decide to fall down a few inches and get in your way, can be very frustrating, the rubber bands make it a breeze.
