2000 Speedster SK starter issues

At about the end of the season I noticed quite a peculiar problem with my speedster in terms of the starter with the battery cut off. When I go to switch the battery on, the starter immediately turns on even with the key to the off position. When I put the key to the run position the boat starts up fine and runs fine. However when I turn the key off the the engine stops like normal but the starter doesn't continue to run and instead my bilge pump kicks in. Just with my guessing I'm pretty sure its an electrical problem or a short of some kind?

Anyone have a good idea of what the problem may be?

Definitely electrical, but the starter and bilge pump should be totally unrelated.

For the starter it could be a faulty starter solenoid, or a bad ignition switch. You can try disconnecting them one at a time to see if you can isolate the problem. Other than that you are going to have to start chasing wires and look for any signs of corrosion.

For the bilge pump it could be either the dash mounted switch, or the pump its self. Keep in mind these are just starting points and you'll have to do some looking around.

Yup... you got a problem. I'm not even sure where to start.

On the 2000 I'm not sure how the MPEM ties into everything.

OK... I guess solve one thing at a time. Disconnect the bilge pump and the starter to start with. Then check the solenoid. Turn on your battery, and listen for it to "Click" up. Then hit your key, and listen for it to "Click" down. If it doesn't click down... unplug the wires going to it, and then listen for it to drop. If there is constant power going to the solenoid, I would first check the key switch for proper function. Unfortunately, if the key works... then your problem is the MPEM.

Last year, I picked up a used 95 XP with a similar issue, and after I got it back to my shop, I figured out that the MPEM was roasted. I know that isn't what you want to hear... but it happens. The owner of that XP said he was riding it around, and it just died. then when he went to restart it... the starter wouldn't shut off, but the engine didn't restart either.

By any chance, did you try to jump start the boat from a running vehicle, or while connected to a charger?

The same situation occured some time over the summer last year however when i ran the hose on the engine and started it in my driveway. It went away for some time. Would that be corrosion?
