Hi everyone. I just purchased a 2000 RX DI about a month ago and have run into my first problem with it. I’m hoping someone could help me out.

Just a few days ago I noticed at high RPM’s approximately 5500 RPM the engine has a miss. When it starts to misfire or surge the RPMs drop and I can only for 35 Mph also on occasion the Maintenance Light will flash and “Maintenance” will ready across the left gauge. I removed the spark plugs and notice the PTO plug was a lot lighter in colour that the Mag side plug. I wouldn’t say white but not as brownish as the other.

I took the ski into the dealer for a scan but had no active faults in the system

I’m a licensed automotive tech for 20
Years and have a good understanding but is there something I’m missing ? I have good battery voltage at idle and about 13.5 volts off idle. I perform diode test on the rectifier/regulator and as well ohm’s tested my stator and all tested within specs. I have not tested fuel pressure yet but think it should be ok. It starts up runs great but just cuts out at higher RPM.Ive read the fuel screen or sock in the tank can plug up. Can this cause fuel starvation in one cylinder at higher RPM ?

Any help would be great

Thank you.

If you had a maintenance light and it went away the code should still be there in the history or non active faults. So even though it is not active it should still show up.
Not sure about the dealer’s reader but my candoo pro will show past faults and I can clear them if I choose.
It is just my opinion but I would say your rectifier is having a hard time keeping up at high rpms because the fuel pump is drawing too much amperage. The reason is more than likely clogged filters.
If it were me, I would pull the fuel pump and clean. Install new filters.
Airtex fs220 and fs242. Can be purchased at most any auto parts store.
Replace the external canister filter. Can be purchased from dealer. Expensive.
Some people including myself cut that filter out and replace with a wix33095 and two stainless hose clamps.
While doing this I would bite the bullet and get a new OEM rectifier because it is not a matter of if it fails, but a matter of when.
Good luck.

Thank you for your reply. I will be following your advice and will be changing the filters. I didn’t see an inline filter. I would assume it’s on the feed line from tank to fuel rail ? Also with regards to the rectifier. If I unplug it on the water would or could the problem disappear? I understand my battery won’t be charging when unplugged.

Yes the filter is connected to the supply line.
Unplugging the rectifier will most probably put the ski into limp mode.

Well I’m not 100% sure but I don’t think there is an inline filter. The ski is at the dealer and I’ll be picking it up this afternoon. I’ll take another look but pretty sure there isn’t one there.

Again thank you for your help.

Have good fuel pressure. 27psi with key in and over 100 psi running. Can’t tell exact psi running as my gauge only goes to 100psi but it does max out the needle.

Removed fuel pump and filter looks to be plugged. Ordered new filter and inline filter. Hopefully this corrects the issue.

Thank you for the help!!!

Well was able to get out on the water today and after changing all fuel filters still have the same problem. If there is any other suggestions I’d really appreciate the help.

Thank you.

Did the maintenance light come on and the rpms drop down with max speed of 35 like mentioned in your first post?
If so, you really need to get the “occurred” faults read and make sure it is in fact the rectifier not keeping up at high rpms.

Yes the maintenance light came on and speed dropped. Had it scanned and P0120 PTO TPS sensor out of range, but it’s in (Stored) state not (Active).

Is there a test to see if the Rectifier isn’t keeping up ?

Would make sense since your pto plug was a lot lighter in color. You can also adjust the tps with the candoo.

Download a manual. It will tell you how to set the tps. You may not need a new pto tps. It may just be out of adjustment.

Ok. I’ll take a look for that. I did all the wiring test as per the Seadoo Manual and it’s coming back that my wiring from the MPEM to the tps connector is good. 5 volts between pins 1and 3 1and 2 as indicated by the shop manual.

I can get a known good used TPS sensor for $25 so may just get it and have the dealer reset the sensor and go from there. Dealer charges $20 to do it.

Where are you located? There's not a dealer within 100 miles from me that will even look at a 2 stroke especially a DI. There is also not a dealer by me that charges $20.00 for anything except maybe a cup of coffee.

Update. After having the Seadoo at the dealer and having them reset the TPS sensor I installed, they found the two throttle bodies were out of sync causing my issue. But as I was at the dealr picking up the Seadoo there was a 2019 GTI 130 for sale with 20 hours and full warranty package good until 2025 for a great deal. So I bought it. Once getting the SeaDoo’s home I listed the 2000 RX and it sold within hours. So without having a chance to ride the RX I have to go with what the dealer said and have to believe they fixed it with the adjustment they made to the throttle bodies

Thank you to everyone that helped

I think you made a great decision. Now you can enjoy the rest of the summer trouble free.
