Hi everyone,
Let me give you a little background first. I'm a pretty handy person, I learn things quickly and always believe if I put in enough research and time I can do most things myself. I've restored a nissan 240sx years ago, all body work and dropped in a new engine. I do all the maintenance work on my vehicles. So I know how to turn a wrench but I'm not a full on mechanic. I solve problems as they arise.
So I wanted a boat. I found a 1998 Speedster that had one motor blown. Let me also add that I have no 2 stroke experience, but I figure everyone starts somewhere.
The engine compartment had a lot of oil sprayed all over it. I couldn't see any obvious leaks. The owner said he never got the problem diagnosed.
I tried to do a compression test but it only turned over a couple of times and then it would just beep. It also shot oil out the spark plug holes. I can turn the crank by hand.
So I decided to pull the motor. I got it out today and took the cover plate off. This is what I saw when I turn the crank.

The pistons look burnt and there is a fair bit of scoring on the pistons and cylinders. Enough that I can feel it pretty good with my finger nail.
I pulled off the head but I couldn't see where the oil all leaked out all over the engine compartment.
So do you think it just needs pistons and rings and the head machined?
Also I could not get the top 2 exaust manifold bolts off. I tried impact gun and torque bar. I didn't want to torque it much more because I was worried about stripping the head.
Anyways, I'm excited to start a new project. I haven't done a project for myself in years.
